Introduction:

The programme provides 14 specialty training posts in each of the ST1-3 years. In addition to these 42 posts, there are 18 FTSTA posts in total, distributed across the three years. The 60 posts are provided by four NHS Trusts:

Oxford Deanery Specialty Training Programme in Psychiatry (Years 1- 3).

Description of the Programme

Distribution of Workplace based learning posts across Trusts

The programme is committed to the principles of workplace based learning and assessment. Workplace based learning opportunities are provided that adhere to the RoyalCollege’s post-graduate training curriculum. These opportunities aim to provide trainees with competency specific learning outcomes addressed to their individual needs.

The overall distribution of the workplace base learning posts across each Trust is as follows:

The more specific distribution of the training posts across the four Trusts in the Specialty Training Programme is provided in Table 1. The specialty training posts in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Partnership NHS Trust include two academic clinical fellowship (ACF) posts across each year.

Training Opportunities across the ST1-3 Programme

The programme provides workplace based training opportunities across each of the current specialty areas in psychiatry in addition to academic, addictions and eating disorder training opportunities. The number of posts available in each specialty is as follows:

ACF posts

There are two ACF posts available from August 07. This number is expected to increase in later years. They are linked academically to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford. Clinically they are linked to educational supervisors in older adult, adult and child & adolescent posts from among the 42 specialty training posts in the programme.

This section outlines the types of workplace based training opportunities (posts) available across each of the specialty training years.

Year One Workplace based learning posts

The type of post available in Specialty Training year one across each Trust (and different geographic locations within the larger trusts) is presented in table 2. There are eight posts in the Psychiatry of Working Adults and six in the Psychiatry of Older Adults. In the FTSTA posts, there are posts in the Psychiatry of Working Adults and one in the Psychiatry of Older Adults.

MRCPsych Course

The programme includes a highly regarded MRCPsych course that provides support for candidates preparing for College Examinations. The course supports learning opportunities that are provided in the workplace. The Course learning activities are based in Oxford. Currently the Part I learning activities are on Tuesday afternoons; the part II learning activities are on Thursday afternoons.

In addition each Trust provides “in-house” formal educational opportunities – journal clubs, case presentation days etc in addition to training opportunities in audit and ECT.
