Proposed Itinerary

May 16-27, 2009

The following proposed Business and Culture in China preliminary itinerary is for the dates of May 16-27, 2009. This itinerary includes academic-focused programs, company visits, and cultural experiences in Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Beijing,China. The cost of this program includes roundtrip airfare from the US to Shanghai, China, and returning from Beijing, China, to the US, as well as housing in 3-4-star hotels with internet access and double occupancy rooms for an estimated 15-20 students. All breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals are included. Related expenses will be the sole responsibility of the students and/or University.

Saturday, May 16

Fly from the US to ShanghaiPudongInternationalAirport (Shanghai, China).

Sunday, May 17

Arrive in Shanghai, China. Students will be met by a chartered bus and transported to their hotel. Check-in at hotel with a little time to settle in. Evening: Welcome Dinner hosted by Kong and Allan at a local Chinese restaurant.

Monday, May 18

Breakfast: Will be provided each morning at the student’s hotel.

Morning: Bus Tour of Shanghai and Sight-Seeing. Chartered with an English speaking guide to provide the students with an overview and history of the city.

Lunch: Provided at or near the lecture facility.

Afternoon: Introduction to the Program – Overview of the program and introduction to key contacts.

Afternoon: Presentation – Doing Business in China – Overview of business culture and recent developments in China. Various lecturers are possible.

Dinner: All dinners will be arranged and scheduled by Kong and Allan with an attention to exposing students to the different regional tastes and styles in China.

Tuesday, May 19

Morning: Presentation - US State/National Role in China – A closer look at the US role in China and business partnership promotion. Possible presenter from either the US Embassy/US Chamber of Commerce or a local State office.

Lunch: Provided at or near the lecture facility.

Afternoon: Presentation – HR Environment in China – Presentation will consider human resources in China. Possible speaker in the HR profession with a leading foreign company.

Wednesday, May 20

Early Morning: Leave for Suzhou, China. A chartered bus will be scheduled for 1 day in Suzhou.

Morning: Non-US Multinational Company Visit in Suzhou – A plant tour and opportunity to speak with the management from a large non-US multinational company in Suzhou.

Lunch: Provided at or near the company facility.

Afternoon: US Multinational Company Visit in Suzhou – A plant tour and opportunity to speak with the management from a large US multinational company in Suzhou.

Dinner: Will be arranged in Suzhou at or near the company facility.

Evening: Return to Shanghai.

Thursday, May 21

Early Morning: Leave for Hangzhou, China. A chartered bus will be scheduled for 2 days in Hangzhou.

Morning: Small Local Company Visit in Hangzhou – A plant tour and opportunity to speak with the management from a small size local company in Hangzhou.

Lunch: Provided at or near the company facility.

Afternoon: Large Local Company Visit in Hangzhou – A plant tour and opportunity to speak with the management from a large local company in Hangzhou.

Dinner: Will be arranged in Hangzhou at or near the hotel.

Friday, May 22

Early Morning: Leave for cultural tour of Hangzhou.

Morning: Chinese Tea Culture in Hangzhou – Hangzhou is famous for many things, one being tea. A guided tour of a tea plantation and tea house in the mountains of Hangzhou will engage students in China’s rich tea culture.

Lunch: Provided at or near the tea tour location.

Afternoon: Visit the WestLake in Hangzhou – The West Lake is considered as one of the most beautiful lakes in the East of China. The visit will include a scenic boat tour and visit to FairyIsland at the center of the WestLake.

Dinner: Will be arranged in Hangzhou on the WestLake.

Evening: Return to Shanghai.

Saturday, May 23

Early Morning: A chartered bus will be scheduled for 1 day in Shanghai. Leave for cultural sight-seeing.

Morning: Cultural Tour of Shanghai – Shanghai is a historic city with many rich cultural locations. Students will be taken on a tour including Jing’An Temple, the JadeBuddhaTemple and Yu Yuan Garden.

Lunch: Provided during the tour.

Afternoon/Evening: Travel to Beijing, China – Bus transportation to the airport and travel by air to Beijing. Students will be met by a chartered bus and transported to their hotel.

Sunday, May 24

Early Morning: A chartered bus will be scheduled for 1 day in Beijing. Leave for cultural sight-seeing.

Morning: Great Wall Visit – The Great Wall of China is known throughout the world. Students will visit the Great Wall and walk on its historic stones.

Lunch: Provided directly following the Great Wall visit.

Afternoon: Ming Tombs Visit – From 1368-1644, 13 Ming Dynasty emperors were buried in separate tombs located near Beijing. Each year, only a few tombs are made available for public viewing. Students will visit the tombs for a cultural and historic understanding of China.

Monday, May 25

Morning: Presentation – Government and Economics in China – Understanding the difference in Beijing as a political center and Shanghai as an economic center are important to anyone visiting China. Presenters will discuss these roles more at length, focusing on government relations in China’s current development.

Lunch: Provided at or near the company facility.

Afternoon: Presentation – Media and PR in China – Topic covers the role of media and public relations in China for businesses. Potential speaker from CCTV9 or an industry professional from a local or foreign company.

Tuesday, May 26

Early Morning: Leave for company visit. A chartered bus will be scheduled for 1 day in Beijing.

Morning: Legal Environment in China – Topics covering the legal system in China and its relationship to business. Possible speaker from TransAsia, LLM Professor at TsinghuaUniversity or another leading law firm.

Lunch: Provided at or near the company facility.

Afternoon: Forbidden City Visit – The Forbidden City is at the center of Beijing and much of Beijing’s culture. Student’s will have the opportunity to explore the beautiful walled city and its many highlighted attractions within.

Thursday, May 27

Fly from BeijingInternationalAirport (Beijing, China) to the US. Bus transportation will be provided for all students from the hotel to the airport.
