2011 HIGHLIGHTS
USTA Washington District Personnel Announcements
¨ Ronnie Goodall began his position as Executive Director.
¨ New TSR, Vivian Coto, covers DC School Tennis, JTT, memberships, and QST 10&U initiative.
¨ New intern, Tyler McGinnis, began working in April on various projects.
Community Tennis
¨ Organizational memberships are at 54, an increase from 43 in 2010; the National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTLs) Chapters are at 19; there are 20 Community Tennis Associations and member clubs. Current individual memberships are now at 1,836, compared to 1,788 in 2010.
¨ In January, the Board, the Executive Director, and many CTA/NJTL member clubs hosted a booth at the NBC News4 Health & Fitness Expo. Two courts were assembled, and more than 700 families in the metropolitan area were introduced to QuickStart.
¨ The Board, the Executive Director, plus eleven leadersfrom various member organizations and CTAsattended the CDW held in February. The Washington Tennis and Education Foundation, a WTA Member Organization, was awarded CTA of the Year.
¨ The Second Annual Battle Against Obesity occurred on April 30, 2011 at the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center. More than 200 youngsters and adults attended the event.
¨ During the Washington Kastles World Team Tennis events during the month of July, DC staff and volunteers worked the MAS booth, Fast Serve Cage, and raised funds for USTA/WTA.
¨ On July 30, Dream for Kids Extreme Recess was held; USTA/WTA volunteers assisted.
¨ During the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, USTA/WTA staff and volunteers assisted with staffing the MAS booth.
¨ On August 1, the District participated in 2011 “Fresh Courts” Initiative in Partnership with American Express, a ground breaking ceremony for the two courts that will be renovated at Jefferson Junior High School. Special guests in attendance were John Isner, AXP Next Contender/Tennis Professional; Jeff Neuman, Legg Mason Tennis Classic Director; Alex Chang, American Express/ VP, Sports Marketing; Dave Haggerty, USTA First Vice President;; Jesus Aguirre, DPR; John Stokes, DPR; and Jerri Ingram, DPR.
¨ HSBC Champions Cup was held September 23 at the Verizon Center. Staff assisted USTA National and Section with the 10&U tennis demonstration and the booth. Several youth from DC organizationsparticipated in the event.
¨ Nickelodeon Worldwide Day of Play was held September 24 at the Ellipse. Staff and member org volunteersassisted with the USTA Smash Zone activities. Several youth from DC orgsparticipated in the event as demonstrators; the event was captured on film.
¨ WTT X TeamTennis Championship was hosted by USTA/DC in June.
Schools Program
¨ The School Tennis Initiative was launched in March. The Citywide School Initiative netted 12 robust school tennis programs throughout the city during the month of May.
¨ School assemblies were held in September at Oyster Elementary Schools andCAPS Amos 1 Charter School. Two in-service trainings were held in October, hosted by EL Haynes Public Charter School &Eagle Prep AcademyElementary School. Member orgs LAYC and SETLC helped to facilitate.
Junior Team Tennis and QST
¨ JTT Spring Season league attracted more than 200 players.
¨ Philly NJTL Cup: Attended by AASSTC, CREATE Tennis, LAYC and SETLC.
¨ 12 teams advanced to Section Championship scheduled held 8/12-14 at University of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg VA.
¨ JTT Awards Ceremony: Parents and youth gathered for trophies and awards.
¨ National Parks and Recreation Day (LMTC) – Held on July 30, USTA staff and volunteers attended and administered several QST courts.
¨ NJTL National winners - Desire Johnson (WTEF) 12U Boys Essay & Caleb Boyd (CREATE) 12U Boys Art.
¨ In August, Stars of Tomorrow event was held during the Legg Mason Tennis Classic. Several DC 10U teams participated. All teams recognized on Center Court during the LMTC.
Adult Leagues
¨ The Washington District had four champion teams at the Mixed Doubles Sectional Championships advance to the National Championships to represent the section.
¨ The USTA/WTA Annual Picnic and Awards Ceremony was held July 30th at East Potomac Tennis Center.
¨ The Senior League finished on August 24th. Over 100 league players attended the Picnic and Awards Ceremony at the Rock Creek Park tennis courts Saturday September 17th.
¨ Seven teams from the Washington District advanced to the USTA National Championship held in Indiana Wells, California. Our 5.0 Women’s Team – High Rollers won the USTA National Championship.
Marketing and Communication
¨ The Washington District website was revamped to provide timelier, relevant information to our members and other interested parties.
¨ The USTA/WTA van, emblazoned with colorful and striking graphics to promote tennis in DC, appeared at all official USTA/WTA functions throughout the District.
Annual Meeting
The USTA Washington District Annual Meeting will be held Saturday, November 12 at the Kellogg Conference Center in Washington, DC. Record attendance of more than 125 guests is anticipated.
