NARRATIVE & DOCUMENTATION

Program Title: Associate in Arts in Studio Art for Transfer

Criteria A. Appropriateness to Mission

Item 1. Statement of Program Goals and Objectives

This program is designed for students planning to transfer to a California State University (CSU) with a major in Studio Art.
The five Program Objectives (also referred to as Program Learning Outcomes)
After completion of the program students will demonstrate:
·  The ability to analyze visual art.
·  Creative problem solving, in the areas of form, content, function, and expression.
·  Skills and techniques used in multiple media to produce visual art.
·  The appropriate use of terminology pertinent to the media or the field.
·  An understanding of art in its historical context, including the social, political, economic, and religious context.
The goals and objectives of the art courses are to teach students a command of being visually literate and furthering the skills in analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and critical thinking. The philosophy behind the actual production of artwork further nourishes an understanding of the creative process and development of aesthetic perception, while recognizing the importance of process; it focuses deliberately on content and end product.
The program philosophy connects people to themselves, their culture, and their civilization; it builds an understanding of diversity and the multicultural dimensions of our world. Invariably, the courses emphasize that students apply these concepts, aesthetic perception, and critical thinking to their own lives and the world around them.
A goal of the visual arts program is to make a contribution to general education. Given the ambitious scope of the arts, the courses are designed to offer a breadth and depth in three primary areas; art history, two-dimensional art, and three-dimensional art. All of the courses are designed to encourage and develop a visually literate, creative, and critically thinking student.
Visually literate individuals are better able to understand the world around them. They are able to critique the increasing number of visual images that exist in contemporary society and are capable of communicating with a broader audience in a more immediate manner than individuals who are only subconsciously aware of the effect that visual systems have.
While other academic studies focus on communication in written and aural form, the arts focus on visual language. Students of the arts learn to comprehend and produce statements in a semiotic system that is not fully examined in any other field of study. It is this focus on visual literacy that distinguishes the arts from other fields.
