THE FASTEST EGG DROP CONTEST PHYSICS

PHYSICS 2014 1ST AND 3RD PERIOD ONE EXAM GRADE

OBJECTIVE: BECAUSE WE ARE STUDYING FREE FALL, YOU ASSIGNMENT IS TO CONSTRUCT A PACKAGE FOR AN EGG TO SURVIVE A FALL FROM THE TOP OF ZEBRA STADIUM AND REMAIN UNBROKEN AND TAKE THE SHORTEST TIME TO DROP IN SECONDS.

·  THIS IS A PARTNER PROJECT. YOU CAN ONLY USE THE MATERIALS TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN USE. YOU NEED TO DO RESEARCH AND HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT YOUR PROJECT IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE. THE ONLY MATERIALS YOU WILL USE ARE STRAWS, GLUE, POPSICLE STICKS , TOOTHPICKS AND RUBBER BANDS.

·  DUE DATE: THURSDAY OCTOBER 2, 2014 . YOU GET ONE CHANCE AT THIS.

·  EACH TEAM WILL DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT A PACKAGING DEVICE , THAT IS COMPLETELY HOMEMADE, ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATIONS:

·  MAXIMUM MASS 700 GRAMS.

·  MAXIMUM LENGTH, WIDTH AND HEIGHT OF THE PACKING IS 50 CM ON EACH SIDE.

·  YOU WILL USE A MEDIUM CHICKEN EGG WHICH WILL BE SUPPLIED FOR EACH ENTRY. IT CANNOT BE CHEMICALLY OR PHYSICALLY ALTERED. IT MUST BE INSERTED INTO THE PACKAGE IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO THE DROP. EACH PERSON WILL HAVE A MAXIMUM OF TWO MINUTES TO INSERT THE EGG AND PRESENT THE PACKAGE FOR TESTING. I WILL SUPPLY THE RAW EGG(S).USE CONFETTI EGGS IF POSSIBLE

·  THE EGG DROP PACKAGES MUST BE CHECKED IN, MEASURED AND STORED FOR TESTING THE MORNING OF THE COMPETITION. I WILL KEEP THE PACKAGES THAT MORNING TILL CLASS TIME.

·  YOU WILL BE GIVEN A CHART OF TIME, MASS, LENGTH, DISTANCE DROPPED AND YOU WILL HAVE TO DETERMINE g

·  YOUR GRADE WILL BE DETERMINED THE FOLLOWING WAY: DISTANCE FROM SQUARE(IF YOU HIT THE SQUARE YOU GET A 1) + MASS OF PACKAGE DIVIDED BY (WIDTH + LENGTH + HEIGHT OF PACKAGE +TIME) OF DROP AND YOU WILL HAVE 100 POINTS ADDED TO YOUR RAW SCORE IF YOUR EGG IS BROKEN OR CRACKED. THE OBJECT IS TO GET A SCORE AS CLOSE TO ONE AS YOU CAN.= 50 POINTS

·  UNDER THE TWO MINUTES TO PUT EGG IN AND TAKE OUT = 10 POINTS

·  COMPLETELY HOMEMADE = 20 POINTS

·  USED CORRECT MATERIALS = 20 POINTS

·  PROCEDURE FOR TESTING:

o  THE PACKAGE WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE TOP OF THE FOOTBALL STADIUM ONTO THE GROUND ONTO A ONE METER SQUARE.

o  TIME WILL BE MEASURED TO THE NEAREST HUNDRETH OF A SECOND AND WILL START FROM RELEASE AND STOP WHEN THE FIRST PART OF THE PACKAGE HITS THE GROUND, WHICH WILL BE IN A ONE METER SQUARE. FROM THE TIME AND THE DISTANCE DROPPED, YOU CAN DETERMINE THE FORCE OF GRAVITY.

o  YOU WILL HAVE TWO MINUTES TO OPEN THE PACKAGE AND PRESENT THE UNBROKEN EGG.

THE OBJECT IS TO HAVE THE FASTEST DESCENT AND NOT HAVE A BROKEN EGG AND LAND AND STAY IN THE ONE METER SQUARE.
