6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK

6.1  INTRODUCTION

Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.

-Buddha

Health is the level of functional and/or Metabolic efficiency of an organism at both the Micro Cellular & Macro (Social) level. Health promotion includes the provision of the information on healthier life styles for patients and how to make best use of health services with the intention of enabling people to make rational health choices and of ensuring awareness of the factors determining the health of the community. Everyone in this era is searching for the techniques to be healthy. Body is like machine. Organs of human body are like spare parts. So replacement of organs is necessary if it dysfunctions.

Organ donation is the process of removal and transplantation of viable organs from doctor to Recipients; Recipients have to be matched with the Donor Organ in order to reduce the recipients rejection of the new organ.

The demand for viable organs out weight the supply, statistics indicate that approximately every 18 minutes. Someone is added to the national waiting list for organ transplant.

In 1954, Dr. Joseph L Murray performed the first successfully kidney transplant in Boston. Since then, Medical science has concentrated an organ donation as a way of replacing a recipient’s dysfunctional organ with that of a healthy donor organ.

Organ donations are a matter of life and death to someone. This month marks the 50th year of the successful organ transplantation in the United States. As of last week 87,000 Americans were waiting for organ transplants according to the United Network for organ sharing. In the United States and Puerto Rico, there are 58 Organ Procurement Organizations.

Studies that have explored the experience of potential donor families have consistently identified special needs of these families, perceived stressors, and barriers to donation and factors that facilitate donation. Researchers have found that most families over whiningly express positive feelings towards their decision to donate their loved ones organs and feel that if offered them comfort at a time of tragic loss.

Over 95,000 US Patients are currently waiting for an Organ Transplant nearly 4,000 new patients are added to the waiting list each month. Everyday 17 people die while waiting for a transplant of a vital organ such as a heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, lung or bone marrow.

Nearly 10 percent of the patients currently waiting for heart transplants are young people under 18 years of age. An estimated 12,000 people who die yearly meet the criteria for organ donation.

6.2  NEED FOR THE STUDY

Each year, the National Kidney Foundation develops special public education programs aimed to increase public awareness of the need for Organ & Tissue Donation.

Over 95,000 US patients are currently waiting for an Organ Transplant nearly 4,000 new patients are added to the waiting list each month. Everyday 17 people die while waiting for a transplant of a vital organ such as a heart, liver, kidney, pancreas, lung or bone marrow.

Because of the lack of available donors in this Country, 3916 Kidney patients, 1,570 Liver patients, 356 Heart patients, & 245 Lung patients died in 2006 while waiting for life saving organ transplants. Nearly 10 percent of the patients currently waiting for heart transplants are young people under 18 years of age. An estimated 12,000 who die yearly meet the criteria for organ donation, but less than half of that number becomes actual donors.

Currently there are 59 organ procurement organizations across the county, which provide organ procurement services to 272 transplant centers. All hospitals are required by law to have a required referral system in place. Under this system, the hospital must notify the local organ procurement organization of all patient death.

Transplant is the only area in all of health that cannot exit without the participation of the public. The teacher are expected to come forward to motivate themselves and other public for organ donation.

6.4 REVIEW OF LITERATURE

1.  Studies related to the knowledge of organ donation.

2.  Studies related to the knowledge and attitude on organ donations.

3.

6.4.1 STUDIES RELATED TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF ORGAN DONATION

SAVARIA ETAL, 2001 identified the major driving forces of families who consented to organ donation. These forces included the donor’s belief in helping others. 45% of the families ability to make something positive out of the death 41% the chance to offer someone else the opportunity to live a better life (40%) and an opportunity to fulfill the wishes of the donor 28% a means to have the donor live on 19%, a way to serve as a memorial to the decedent 3% and the manes to allow the donor to be removed from life support 1%.

DEJONG ETAL, 2003 interviewed 164 potential donor families to examine their experiences with the donation process and identified factors that were associated with consent for organ donation. This study found that beliefs, attitudes and knowledge greatly differed between donor and on-donor families.

THOMAS HUGH FEELY ,2007 report that the student lack of information and knowledge on organ donation and tissue donation.23% reported signing an organ donation card of state organ donation registry,36% reported having conversation about organ and tissue donation.

6.4.2 STUDIES RELATED TO KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE ON ORGAN DONATION

WEREMEN, 2002 conducted a study regarding the knowledge of which organs and tissues could be transplanted. 99.1% registration for the second semester of 2002, 779 of the 1001 students from the Medical School, Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. The percentage of those willing to donate organs was greater among spiritualist than among Catholics and Protestants. The results of the study support a greater emphasis on providing information regarding transplantation in Medical Schools to improve the knowledge of future health care professionals about organ donation issues.

According INTERNATIONAL EMERGENCY NURSING [2009] report several studies have attempted to investigate the role of culture and race in organ donation and transplantation. the researcher found that

there are indeed human leukocyte antigen that are

specific to individual races and that affects the transplantation outcomes[Milford 1987] similarly [Weller 1987] shows that graft and patient survival were improved when donors and recipient are of the same race.
