HowMobilityandTransportationShaped theModernWorld

Therecentturntowardsa“global”historicalframeworkhasputthespotlightononeofthekeydynamicsoftheprocessofglobalizationitself:mobilityinhistory. Acrossregionsandtimeperiods,historiansnowconsiderroutesratherthanroots.Thiscoursewillexaminetheaccelerationoftimeandtheshrinkingofspacethroughmodernmodesoftransportation.Itinterrogatesthemodernemphasisonspeedandthecomingoftheglobalorderbylookingattrains,boats,cars,andplanes. Theclasswillemphasizethehistoryoftechnologyasitintersectswiththemovementofpeopleandgoods.

Course Mechanics

Allscheduledclassesaremandatoryandwillbeginontime. Pleasedonotarriveafterclassbegins. Classtimewilleitherconsistoflecture(whichwillincludeimagesandstudentparticipation)orlecture-discussionbasedontheweek’sreadings. Morethanthreemissedclasseswillresultinfailure.Nolatepaperswillbeaccepted.Inaddition,eachFridayyouwillhaveclass,eitherasafieldtrip,asection

oranIMLlab.Thereare,however,afewweeks,whendiscussionwilltakeplaceonThursdayratherthan

Friday. Pleasenotethiscarefullyinthesyllabus.

ProjectandMulti-MediaComponentoftheClass: Studentswillbedividedintofourprojectgroups.

2) Thespacesoftransport(trainstations,ports,airports,garages,parkinglots,freeways)

3) Representationsoftheexperienceoftransport(inwrittenfiction,film,art)

4) Displaysoftechnologyandtransport(asintransportmuseums)

Eachstudentwillprepareathree-fivepagepaperandapowerpointorshortfilmtodistributetoeachoftheirfellowgroupmembersonanindividualelementineachgroup. Forexample,inspacesoftransport,wemighthavesomeonedoapaper/projectonHeathrowandanotherontheGareSaint-Lazare. Thiswilldependonthenumberofstudentsintheclassandrelativestudentinterestetc.Thestudentswillreadeachother’spapersandlookateachother’spowerpoint/filmanddevelopamulti-medianarrativepresentationthattheyproducetogetherfortheirgrouptobepresentedinasingleclassperiod. Thestudentgrouppresentationsmaymergeindividualpresentationsormaybeanentirelynewproduction. Allmaterials(individualjpgs,filmclips,powerpointsandquicktimemovies)willbeavailableforallstudentstouseastheydothetake-homefinal.

Theclassfinalexamwillbetocreateafinalwrittenormulti-mediaprojectthatanswersoneofthree

questionsdistributedatthestartofthegrouppresentationprocessthatwillbebasedonmaterialsfromallofthepresentations.Thelengthofthewrittenpaperwillbetenpagesandinslidetermswillbeabout75slidesortenminutesoffilm.

Grading:Thesearemeanttoserveasguidelinesforevaluationinthiscourse.Gradesarenotcalculatedmathematically,butaredeterminedthroughaprocessofevaluation. AllgradingisdoneonanA-Fbasis.
