FOREWARD

On behalf of the Management Committee I present the 54th Annual Report and Financial Statement for your consideration and approval.

A job well done by all those who patrolled our beach this season under the direction of the Patrols Captains, the Club Captain, Col Mitchell and Vice President Lifesaving, John Gorely. They were all ably assisted by the Lifesaving Committee and the administration staff. Along with Craig Clarke, I had the dubious task of inspecting patrols during the latter part of the season. Although there is room for improvement the majority of members were visibly committed and I felt confident that each patrol could rescue and provide the necessary resuscitation and first aid if required.

Congratulations to all competitors, team managers, assistants, coaches, office bearers, and Surf Sports Committee members. The season was certainly one of the best and it may be hard to better but I am sure under the direction of the Surf Sports Committee anything is possible.

Once again the Supporters Club and Sponsors donated record amounts to the Surf Club and above all this allowed us to reduce our debt by a substantial amount whilst maintaining and improving the Surf Club environment.

A final commendation to Brian, Maureen, John and all the Office Bearers who have contributed to this season and the recording of the same in this annual report.

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Another successful season has just ended with all members to be congratulated on the way in which they performed their various duties and responsibilities. Surf Life Saving has become an integral part of the Gold Coast, with tourism especially relying on surf clubs to provide safe beaches for visitors and locals alike. Under the leadership of John Gorely and Colin Mitchell, our lifesaving services have excelled this season with excellent patrol attendance and a high quality of vigilance. Congratulations to our Life Saving Committee who have strived to achieve a level of professionalism and dedication on our patrols and in the education of our members.

The competition year ended on a record-breaking note. This year’s Australian Championships were the Club’s most successful with 9 Gold Medals. We also achieved 2nd in the Australian Championship Pointscore. Congratulations to all our competitors who represented Northcliffe with distinction throughout the season from Nippers through to Masters. Special mention to Hayley Bateup who won 3 Gold Medals including the Open Ironwoman (Hayley also won the Female Competitor of the Carnival). Great effort Hayley. Thanks to all our Coaching Staff for a great year.

Obviously in an organization such as ours, there are many members who volunteer their time to assist in the management and direction of the Club, and it’s activities. Further, I would like to thank all members who have sat on various committees of the Club and to those members who have helped in many other ways, at making Northcliffe what it is today. Our major financial contributions have once again come from our Supporters Club and I would like to thank Mike Deane and the Supporters Club Management Committee for their continued assistance and their appreciation of the direction in which

the Club is travelling.

Mike Deane and our Patron, Terry Jackman, have again provided our Management with professional guidance and support through their vast network of supporters and associates. On behalf of the Club I would like to thank Mike and Terry for their immeasurable assistance over many years.

Thanks also to Sheryl and all the Staff at our Supporters Club for their professional and cordial service to our members and patrons.

Today’s surf club requires considerable support to an increasing membership and vast array of services for both the Surf Life Saving and Supporters’Clubs. Northcliffe’s Staff have the responsibility of the day to day running of the Club, a task which they all perform in a professional and efficient manner.

On behalf of the Club I would like to sincerely thank our General Manager, Brian Parker, our Manager Lifesaving & Surf Sports, John Ogilvie, our Administrative Assistant, Maureen Gorely and our Junior Development Officer, Luke Richmond, for all the time and effort they have put into their respective roles at the Club.

The future of Northcliffe is definitely in good hands with our Junior Activities Committee giving our juniors a great opportunity to develop their life saving skills and become senior members at Northcliffe. Thanks to Stephen Fry and his Committee for all the work they do for our youngest and most important members.

Northcliffe is proud to be associated with many companies and individuals that support our Club financially year after year. We sincerely thank them for their support and hope they continue their association with Northcliffe.

On a personal note I would like to thank my wife, Michelle, for her appreciation of my commitment to Northcliffe and her constant support.

I hope you all enjoyed the past season at Northcliffe and look forward to seeing you all next season.

GENERAL MANAGERS REPORT

It is the responsibility of the staff to manage the Club’s facilities and services and to implement the directives from the various committees and office bearers. If the performances of the season are an indication of success, all staff, committees and office bearers are to be congratulated on a job well done. Northcliffe completed its 54th season in a healthy state, patrol wise, competitively and financially. Our reputation as a harmonious, friendly family Club continues to attract high calibre members willing to contribute for the betterment of us all.

As always the first and greatest tribute must be paid to our volunteer patrolling members who have again delivered Northcliffe beach another fatality free summer. Our tireless members, under the guidance of Club Captain, Col Mitchell, have performed over 1000 preventative actions, rescues and first aid treatments. Special mention should be made of Scott Bradford and Joe Miller for their Gold Certificates presented at the Annual Dinner for outstanding rescues.

Competitively we have left ourselves little room to improve with a 2nd placing at the Australian Championships and a win by our masters at their Aussie Titles. Full credit goes to our competitors, coaching staff and surf sports office bearers for lifting the profile of the maroon star. Even TV commentator Darryl Eastlake had a lump in his throat as the Taplin Relay team crossed the line for their 3rd win in four years.

The Club’s future, our juniors, had another solid year with our limit of 300 members easily achieved. Under the guidance of Stephen Fry and his committee, our juniors have had an insight into the life saving movement and hopefully many of these will carry the torch into the coming decades. Thank you to all the age managers, water safety officers and officials for your tremendous support role.

Thank you also goes to our staff, Maureen, John and Luke, the volume of work performed by this team has to be seen to be believed. Thank you also to our sponsors and supporters, your donations and funding of our subsidy scheme has assisted the Club at all levels. Our Sportsman’s Luncheon continues to impress, a crowd of 350 enjoyed a great afternoon of entertainment and raised nearly $50,000 for the Club.

I see a major part of my role at Northcliffe in the management of our assets and the reduction of our liabilities. I am happy to report an Operating Surplus of over $284,000 for the year following income of nearly $1,000,000. Our healthy bottom line meant that we were able to reduce our debt by $207,000 and to inject over $100,000 into capital improvements to our facilities and equipment. Of course our major contributor was the Supporters Club who tipped in $635,000 in donations and a further $72,000 in management fees. Thanks for this goes to the committee under President, Mike Deane and staff under Operations Manager, Sheryl Jones.

As I sat and watched the proceedings at the Annual Dinner I could not help but feel enormous pride to be associated with this great Club. From Whoopsie’s Life Membership, Rex and Norm’s Australian Sports Medals, the Robbie Nay Memorial Trophy nominees and the patrol incentive winners, I felt humbled by the talent within and the tremendous contribution our Club makes to the community. I also spared a thought for those members who didn’t grace the stage but whose contribution was worthy of equal accolade, our instructors, carnival officials, committee men and women and the average patrolling member who dons the red and yellow on a windy, wet Sunday afternoon to ensure that Northcliffe honours its contractual agreement with Council.

The positive human spirit generated by the collective membership is nothing short of amazing and I thank all for their contribution and I look forward to watching what can be achieved next season.

Club Captain’s Report

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

It was with a sense of great pride and pleasure that I accepted the position of Club Captain this season, following the retirement of Scott Bradford. Throughout Scott’s five year term he was responsible for the introduction of many initiatives to maintain Northcliffe’s position at the fore-front of Surf Lifesaving. would like to congratulate Scott on his achievements during his term as Club Captain and thank him for raising the Club to such a level that my progression from Vice Captain was almost effortless. I must also express my gratitude to Kenny Edwards who nominated and encouraged me to accept the position of Club Captain.

The objectives of the Surf Lifesaving Committee for Season 2000/2001 were to achieve Surf Lifesaving Queensland’s target of zero preventable deaths on Northcliffe Beach, to improve the quality of our beach patrols and to further develop the skills of our existing patrolling members. In an endeavour to fulfil these objectives, the Surf Lifesaving Committee implemented a number of key strategies including the introduction of internal Club Patrol Inspections and offering a variety of specialised award courses to existing members. Thanks must go to both David Oxenham and Craig Clarke for conducting the Club Patrol Inspections throughout the season. These inspections served to improve the quality of our patrols, introduce a competitive spirit between patrols and increase the point scores awarded during Branch Patrol Inspections.

In addition, our Chief Instructor Chris Redler, has tirelessly conducted Bronze Medallion courses and offered a wide variety of specialist award courses almost single-handedly this season. My thanks go to Chris and his small team of Instructors for their hard work, commitment and persistence throughout the season. I would call upon all qualified Instructors in the Club to assist Chris

in the training of award candidates next season.

I would like to congratulate the winners (Patrol No. 4) of this seasons Northcliffe Supporters Club Patrol Incentive Scheme. The competition was very tight with many patrols performing exceptionally well in all aspects of the scheme. The competition this season was based on attendance at the House-to-House collection, attendance at Friday Night Raffles, Patrol attendance and Club Patrol Inspection results. I trust the winners will enjoy their prize and hope that the high standards set this season can be exceeded next season.

Lifesaving at Northcliffe beach, continues to be at the fore-front. The introduction of the new Golden Circle beach Signage Kits has improved the appearance of our beach patrols this season. The signage kit was developed jointly by Surf Lifesaving Queensland and the National Safety Council of Australia to increase the recognition of patrolled areas and to comply with safety standards. I think that all will agree the new kit enhances the professional image of surf lifesavers throughout Queensland.

Also introduced to our patrols this season were two “waverunners”or jet skis, operated by Branch. These rescue craft patrol in a similar fashion to the jet boats and provide coverage of black spots and assistance to beach patrols as required.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the beach patrols this season. They include all active members, Patrol Captains and Lifesaving Committee members (John Gorely, Rebecca Wood, Chris Redler, Karyn Wood, David Irvine, Helen Irvineand Elly Van Vliet). A special thanks to John Ogilvie, Brian Parker and Maureen Gorely for assistance beyond their call of duty.

Let’s maintain Northcliffe as a world leading Surf Lifesaving organisation. Thank you for you efforts this season and I look forward to

your continued involvement next season.

Yours in Lifesaving,

COL MITCHELL
