Descrizione del corso: In this first year Italian course, students learn to communicate spontaneously, interpret oral and written language and present concepts, ideas, and cultural awareness in the target language. Within the constraints of the vocabulary and structures that students have mastered, they will be asked to demonstrate novice- level communicative proficiency and a degree of mastery with specific skills and structures in listening, speaking and writing tasks. Authentic materials and real life situations are infused in daily lessons to make learning applicable to everyday local and global situations.

Criteri di valutazione(grading):
Compiti (HW):When homework is assigned, it is expected to always be completed.Homework will be checked at random for completion. In the event that HW is collected, you will receive feedback and comments to review. Late or incomplete homework WILL NOT be accepted. **ALL HW postings will be on Canvas by 3PM.
If you are absent you are required to show me your homeworkupon your return to class in order to receive credit.
Lavoro fatto in classe(Classwork):Classwork will include reading, writing, speaking, listening OR a warm-up activity. These assessments will be collected at random within the allotted amount of time and will count for a grade.
Partecipazione (Participation): Your participation in this class is ENCOURAGED and REQUIREDin order to guarantee your success in this course! You have the opportunity to earn a total of 9 participation points every 4-5 weeks. The scoring rubric will be accessible under Canvas Modules.
On a daily basis you will be provided with opportunities in which you will listen, speak, read and write in Italian. You will be expected to consistently speak in the target language!
Tecnologia:Please be sure that your Canvas page is properly synced to our course, Italian I. You will need your tablet charged every day for class.
Valutazioni (Esami/Presentazioni/Temi):
[Exams/Presentations/Prompts] Can be written or oral. These assessments will be a cumulative review of the material presented in class. You will be assessed in the following categories:
Per esempio…
Interpretive mode: Reading a short passage and summarizing the main points or listening to a song and predicting what the singer’s intentions were while writing it.
Interpersonal mode: Having a conversation in Italian or writing emails back and forth with a friend. “Two-way” communication.
Presentational mode: Giving a speech in Italian or presenting a cultural based piece or ad for a target audience.
Lavoro mandato per email(Emailed work): In the event that you need to email me work, it is mandatory that you useyour school account only. If you are unable to print or access an assignment you must email Prof.ssa Russo two days before the due date.
Your marking period grade will be determined by:
Total points earned
Total possible points
Disonestà scolastica(integrità accademica):(cheating)
Is UNACCEPTABLE on any type of assignment OR assessment.
Cheating includes: talking during a test/quiz/assessment, looking at someone’s paper during a test/quiz/assessment, copying homework, plagiarizing or using an online translator, cheat sheets, writing on desks or text messaging.
In the event that you are caught cheating, you/all parties will receive a zero for the assignment. The assistant principals will immediately be informedand this event will be kept on record.
Uso dei dizionari/traduttori online: (Use of dictionaries/online translators)
Online translators are not permitted! This will result in a 0 for the assignment. I will be ableto tell immediately if a translator was used, please be sure that you do your own work! I encourage you to use dictionaries (online or printed)
Puntualità: (Punctuality/Tardiness)
It is IMPERATIVE that you are on time for class and seated when the bell rings. You will be marked late if you walk into class after the bell rings.
**After 8 unexcused absences from the class you
will lose credit. 3 unexcused tardies result in an unexcused absence.
Per lavoro mancato: (Missed work)
For each day you are out, you will have 2 days to make up any missing assignments. Missed work not made up in a timely fashion will remain a zero.
Please be proactive! Ask me before class begins, not during instruction.
It is your responsibility to find out what you missed when you were absentthis means that you are actively checking Canvas and Genesis.
If you are absent for a quiz or test, but it was announced in advance or posted on my website, you are required to take that quiz or test promptly upon your return to school.
Cell Phone/Tablet Policy:
Cell phones WILL BE prohibited during instruction. They are to be kept in your locker. Cell phones will be confiscated and a green slip will be issued if a student is seen using his/her phone during instruction. Any audio/video recording without my permission will be subject to the consequences in the Manasquan BOE policy #5516.

This is one of Prof.ssa Russo’s most important rules in Italian class! As a member of our classroom community, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to create and enrich a positive learning environment by showing respect in the following ways:
- As soon as the bell rings you are seated and you begin your “Fate adesso” warm-up OR classwork activity if instructed otherwise. Failure to do so will result in loss of points from your participation grade.
- Arrive to class PREPARED! This means your materials are out and ready to use immediately upon entering the room. Have your homework out on your desk, ready to be checked.You may NOT go to your locker during class time.NO BACKPACKS!
- Il bagno:In order to use the bathroom you must retrieve/return the blue pass. Permission will not be given during important discussions or written assessments. Please do not ask to use the bathroom unless it is absolutely necessary, as this will affect your participation use good judgement!
- Listen, do not interrupt the teacher or another student when they are talking. Raise your hand to contribute to class discussion or ask a question.
- VIETATO USO DEL CELLULARE: Cell phones are PROHIBITED during instruction. Please be sure that they are kept in your locker. Any cellphones brought into class will immediately be placed into a pocket holder until the end of instruction.
- La tessera Students are required to wear their badge at all times.
- If a student fails to wear his/her ID badge, he/she will receive a warning for the first offense, teacher detention for the second offense and office referral for the third offense.
- If students lose their ID badge, it is their responsibility to have a pink slip filled out that confirms they are on the administrative list for a replacement.
- Treat everyone with respect and dignity. No swearing, teasing, or bullying. Inappropriate behavior/languageWILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
- Take care of class property by using it correctly, and returning it to proper location after use.
- NO Food or drinks (except bottled water).
- Earbuds are to be kept in your tablet case. Please do not wear them to class. We will however be using them for audio/listening activities.
- Tablets will used for classwork only. Students who use their tablets for tasks unrelated to class will receive a teacher detention.
- Put forth your best effort at all times, remember we are all here to work together and learn!
- We will be working from bell to bell. Please remain seated until Prof.ssa Russo dismisses you
**As the year progresses, please be aware that certain policies might change. We will discuss any changes in class.

- A referral slip will be written up and handed in to the office of the vice principal.

Prof.ssa Russo will be available during community lunch 10:38-11:30 OR afternoons in Media Center by appointment.
B Day: World Language Lab Room 201 (You may also go to the lab on other days to study or work on HW/classwork.
