Concept – CLINICAL JUDGMENT
Concept Definition
An interpretation or conclusion about a patient’s need, concerns, or health problems, and/or the decision to take action (or not), use of modify standard approaches, or improvise new ones as deemed appropriate by the patient’s response. (Tanner, 2006)

Objectives
1. Define the concept of Clinical Judgment.
2. Recognize the relationship between the nursing process, critical thinking, and the
clinical judgment.
3. Describe the four key aspects of the Clinical Judgment Model (Tanner, 2006) and the
sequence in which they occur.
4. Discuss two situations which place a patient at risk as a result of error in clinical
judgment.
