Project Negotiation & Agreement

Employer confirmation of agreed targets and outline of expectations:
The role I have asked Liam to undertake is as Project Manager of all aspects of set-up, research, scripting and production for a series of short videos to be used as an age-appropriate resource in catechising Year 6 children approaching the Sacrament of Confirmation.
The intention is for young people in Year 9 (who have already been confirmed under the present arrangement) to make the videos, supported and assisted by their teachers, chaplains and Diocesan clergy and staff in the Vicariate for Education.
I have recommended Liam approach our Diocesan Safeguarding Officer to arrange to be DBS-checked: not only to ensure his role in this project working with young people is not limited, but also as a useful certification in his future career.
Liam will be working to me. As Director of Communications for the Diocese of Leeds I shall guide and supervise the editorial of the series and take ultimate responsibility for delivery of the project (which may not be practical to complete within the 60-hour time-frame of Liam’s attachment).
Liam’s targets as Project Manager will be assessed on the basis of his ongoing contribution throughout his 60 hours’ involvement, including: the ability to learn the subject-matter quickly and to think both in linear form, and ‘around’ matters of content, creative treatments, and logistics; his ability to explain, influence, and persuade a wide cross-section of colleagues andcontributors;listening and communicating with adults and children alike.
Although Liam will not be expected to take sole or legal responsibility, he will exhibit regard for the Welfare, Safeguarding and Health & Safety issues of young or inexperienced contributors. As his ‘ownership’ of the project progresses, Liam will be expected to make editorial, visual and logistical judgements and decisions on his own initiative, yet in consultation.
Finally, as such a project is rarely if ever the sole task to be undertaken in this line of work and to assess multi-tasking, prioritisation and flexibility Liam must be able to assist me with sundry other tasks in line with his capabilities: occasional press releases and posting material to the website and social media.
The success of Liam’s involvement in the project will be assessed according to a model I adopted as a team leader in BBC production: a ‘chain’of 180-degree mentoring through several levels of age and experience to achieve a usable knowledge of quality video production. My 22 years’ experience as a BBC producer will benefit Liam; Liam’s graduate level journalism and video production course work will refresh and challenge my skills and will also benefit the teaching staff and high school students; and in turn, their educational targets also include mentoring younger students for and with whom they will be working to make the videos.
