Professional Learning Community on Science Assessment

With three years of experience in the implementation of the Science Assessment Test (SAT), the Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Association (HKASME) plans to set up a Professional Learning Community on Science Assessment. The purpose of the communityistohelp foster among our science teachers a collaborative culture in the developmentof quality assessment items/tasks for use inthe Junior Secondary level.

The planned activity of the community in the 2016-2017 session is three 3-hour meetings on science assessment. In each of these meetings, there will be talks and group discussions on setting and moderating assessment questions/tasks. Participants are be required to submit, after the first and the second meetings, a stipulated number of assessment itemsas assignments to the trainers, and feedback will be given to themin due course. Subject to mutual agreement, some of the items submitted would beaccepted and kept in the question bank of the HKASME for use in future SATs. Participants, who have attended all three meetingsand have completed the assignments, will be awarded a certificate of attendance and have full refund for the meetingfee paid.

Details about the three meetings are as follows:

Meeting 1 (20 August 2016): The purpose of assessment, from curriculum to assessment, design of science assessment, setting and moderation of multiple-choice questions, multiple-choice item analysis, feedback to students. Participants will be required to submit, before the second meeting, a stipulated number of multiple-choice questions to the trainers via email.

Meeting 2 (15 October 2016):Discussions on the multiple-choice questions submitted, setting and marking of open-response questions in science assessment, short-response questions in SATs, marking with double-digit coding, strengths and weaknesses of students as revealed in the SATs. Participants will be required to submit, before the third meeting, one short-response question to the trainers via email.

Meeting 3 (17 December 2016):Discussions on the short-response questions submitted, assessing science process skills through experiments, worksheets for experiments, assessing open investigation, rounding up. Certificates of attendance will be distributed in this meeting.

Meeting fee: $200 for three meetings
