Successful Annual Community Grants 2016-17

Project Grants up to $5,000

1. Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights
Respect, Resilience, Responsibility- $3,310
The project involves the development and delivery of 6 x 1 hour sessions to Muslim women on Respectful Relationships. The sessions will be held at Fawkner Community Centre and will focus on general exploration of their life in Australia, their settlement process and the challenges they are facing in integrating into a new country, as well as their family status and relationships and using a variety of adult learning activities to build their skills and knowledge on this topic.
2. Blind Sports and Recreation Victoria
Kicking goals for greater social inclusion in Moreland - $4,710
The project aims to increase awareness of and social inclusion for people with disabilities various community engagement initiatives, have been planned, including a blind football showcase match, a 'Come and Try blind football' event for both sighted and vision impaired, education awareness sessions aim to raise awareness of the abilities of people who are blind and vision impaired to help to create a more inclusive community in Moreland and increasing participation of people with vision loss in their community.
3. Brunswick Coburg Anti-Conscription Commemoration Campaign
Community singing: Brunswick-Coburg Anti-Conscription Centenary - $5,000
This project aims to bring the Moreland community together through the composition and learning of a new song, as part of the commemoration of the centenary of the World War One anti-conscription referendums. The “choral protest” will develop a new song through workshops and the song will be performed at a range of commemorative events planned around Brunswick and Coburg.
4. Casa Cultura Inc
That Inspires Respect - $4,880
This project aims to help secondary school students explore their understanding of respect in relationships, and channel it to creative outputs through a series of workshops that serve as educational and communicational tools to produce a long-term shift of attitude from an early stage and impacting on parents and relatives as well as on teachers and the educational community. The project will collaborate with Brunswick Secondary College, Glenroy Secondary College and Newlands Community House.
5. Didi Bahini Samaj Victoria
Be the Best, Nepalese women wellbeing project - $5,000
The project aims to bring all women together to promote their physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing by providing knowledge, skills and environment to develop their confidence consequently improved health and wellbeing.The program will include opportunities to network with other women, information and resources to promote healthier lifestyles, improved fitness and strength, healthier eating, weight management, sleep and stress management.
6. Field Theory
Romantica 100- $5,000
This project offers a 100 hour, non-stop audio broadcast live from the 24-hour Brunswick institution – Café Romantica. The broadcast will offer residents the opportunity to share their stories and memories of Brunswick as well as with pre-recorded interviews generated from months of intensive community engagement. The project will interview a cross-section of diverse Brunswick locals, play music only played in the cafe and consider Brunswick as a place of shifting identity. Romantica 100 will be a project of celebration and reflection and community connection.
7. Friends of Talbot and Henkel Streets
Improving Talbot and Henkel streets community and landscape - $3,500
The group will organise a range of community building activities including, clean-up Talbot and Henkel streets involving several small community working bees to incrementally remove rubbish, weed the nature strips, and mulch in the nature strips. The project aims to rejuvenate nature strips by planting out formerly weedy areas on Henkel Street and planting indigenous species as part of the nature strip beautification.
8. Inner North West Blue Light
Breaking the barriers through local participation and cultural food as a tool - $5,000
The project will engage with local police members and local community members through cultural food from Muslim communities in particular and other new arrivals living in Moreland.Around 20-30 community members from various communities will attend the lunches with members of the police. During the food, informal conversation will help the community talk about their culture and communities to police discussing how the laws are different in Australia compared to their home countries.
9. Lighthouse foundation
Mothers and Babies home Community Connection Project - $5,000
The project will establish a local community committee and to form connections with the carers and the young women who are in need of friends and practical help. Each Lighthouse home has a local community committee which meets monthly at the home, to provide support and connection for the young people of that home, as well as planning fundraising and attending to ongoing maintenance needs of the home.
10. Tamara Russell
Moreland Quilt - $4,700
A 12 month community engagement project working with local business, artists, community groups, neighbourhood houses, libraries, schools and age-care facilities. The project will create a large textile ‘Quilt’ representing Moreland resident’s cultural diversity whilst recording the history of the participants. This project aims to improve social interaction, raise awareness, and foster cross-generational and cross-cultural friendships.
11. Multicultural Arts Victoria
Paper Hood - Bluestonia - $5,000
This project aims to explore identity, culture and creative expression through large paste ups in the bluestone Laneways of Moreland and Melbourne. The large-scale street art paste-ups will take place in Alleyways in Moreland with large paste-ups to attract a wide audience to run alongside Mapping Melbourne. This installation will help promote cultural relations between communities and countries.
12. Muslim Women's Council of Victoria
Breaking Fast, Breaking Bread, Breaking Barriers - $4,800
This is a one off event held during Ramadan 2017 is to break the fast within the Muslim community and invite the Moreland community to join in a dinner that aims to foster positive dialogue , increase understanding and address barriers and misunderstandings between Muslim and non- Muslim communities to this is a cultural tradition and together break down barriers.
13. Russian Orthodox Church Abroad Holy Protection Cathedral
Multicultural Moreland and Russian Community - $5,000
The project will work with volunteers and various section leaders to consult with the community to establish a succession plan with formalised structures, whereby running various social and recreational and cultural events and activities that will encourage volunteering, provide leadership opportunities for the younger generation, increase learning across the whole community.
14. Tongberangi Ngargga
Yidaki Connecting Circle - $4,561
The Yidaki (didgeridoo) Connecting Circle project will enable Aboriginal males to connect with other Aboriginal community members through a structured learning activities in a culturally safe and appropriate environment for Aboriginal males to learn more about the their culture, the significance of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal practices and protocols, and the crafting of a Yikadi. The participants will organise a community event that will showcase the project and participants’ experiences in the project while connecting with their culture and other community members.
15. University of Melbourne
Count Me In: Promoting participation in sport for migrant and refugee children and youth - $4,364
The project will run free, weekly theatre classes for young people aged between 14 and 18 lead by professional artists. The program will offer 10 workshops in actor training in a variety of techniques and will work towards the development of a new script under the guidance of playwright Morgan Rose. The created work will be presented to an audience of friends and family.
16. VICSEG New Futures
Creative Arts Promoting Healthy Families - $5,000
The project will engage with parents and young children using play based creative learning strategies to promote respectful relationships within families. The participants will develop crafted artworks, symbolic of aspects of the groups' culture, with a focus on family and community wellbeing. These will be presented in a theatrical way and installed and presented at a special public event to celebrate and showcase the artworks.
17. Westside Circus
Altitude - John Fawkner College - $5,000
The 3 stage multi-year project will see professional artists working closely with the school, Moreland Youth Services and interested community organisations, adding value to the existing programs being implemented by groups. Direct links will be made between outcomes of circus-based activities and those sought by partners in the areas of work ready skills and sustained engagement with education.
18. Yellow Ladybugs
Mentoring Program - $2500
The project aims to raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder in Moreland. This includes talks to local kindergartens, GP's and schools. The project aims to support girls in the local area, by finding girls at local schools, and inviting them to join in our social activities for girls on the spectrum. The group is aimed at young girls with Autism to create social events, where girls can come together and have the opportunity to meet and bond over their similar journey.
19. Yeti Soccer Club Inc
Half Yearly Multicultural event - $3,700
The event aims to bring Nepalese residents together in Moreland for a social recreational soccer event. To reduce cultural and communal isolation via a multicultural get together to involve people from different communities to share their beliefs and cultural views to sustain multicultural harmony.The event aims to encourage families and youth to live healthy all the activities are targeted to include all residents from young to old and will include cultural and musical performances.

Capital Works Partnership Grants up to $40,000

1. Brunswick Bowling Club
Shade Provision at Victoria Street, Brunswick - $10,000
Demolish existing corrugated and timber shade structures. Removal of uneven concrete path. Relocate of existing flag pole. Install 12 new curved shade structures for greater sun shade coverage.

2. Coburg Districts Football Club
Coaches & Timekeeper Box at Cole Reserve Pascoe Vale - $40,000
Construction of a Coaches & Timekeeper Box on the west side of the oval for use by the football, cricket and other sporting clubs using the facilities.
Total value of project: $97,920.74
3. Glenroy West Kindergarten
Fawkner Community Shed at Charles Mutton Reserve Athletics Pavilion, Fawkner - $40,000
Upgrade the vacant Athletics Pavilion for the community Men’s Shed and programs. The works will include: installation accessible toilet, a new store room roller door, a new and upgraded front and rear entrances, a new concrete path to link at the rear of the building, installation of accessible parking bays, a new servery between the social and kitchen rooms and new kitchen cupboard doors.

4. Glenroy Football Club
Upgrade sports field floodlighting at Sewell Reserve, Glenroy- $40,000
Upgrade current lighting system to meet training and competition standards. Replace four existing lights towers to enable the sports clubs to utilise the facilities more at night to cover the ever increasing junior and senior demand on the oval during daylight. It will also enable parents more time after work to see their children participate in the training activities as well as playing during the weekends. The lights will enable all teams to participate in competitive night activities including cricket football and netball. The lights will be up to the standards that enable competition games for all sports.

5. Melbourne City Ballet
Installation of change rooms and new studio located at Pentridge Blvd, Coburg - $40,000
This project will increase the studio space to house new programs for the community, plus new change rooms and storage for new participants, providing a more comfortable and functional environment.
Total value of project: $120,968
6. Moreland Eagles Football Club
Sports field floodlighting at Wallace Reserve Glenroy- $40,000
Construct and install 2 additional floodlight towers, increasing the current capacity of the floodlighting system to increase participation for players and use the soccer field to its full potential.
Total value of project: $94,070
7. Penola St Francis Moreland Community Sporting Association
Relocation of the canteen and renovation of the female toilets at JP Fawkner Reserve Oak Park - $40,000
Relocate the inside canteen to a more user friendly area outside the current pavilion, that will allow internal and external patrons to be served. The removal of the existing canteen will open up the clubrooms expanding the seating area for 80-100 people during functions.
The extension will also include an enhanced area to watch inside, football, cricket and other outside sporting events from an extended viewing area, offering greater space inside the pavilion.

8. Robinson Reserve Neighbourhood House
Sensory Garden - Reynard St Coburg - $38,196
The work will involve hard landscaping of the back area of the site as well as planting and mulching through a volunteer gardening program. This work will transform the back area into an interactive, natural teaching space for children, families and other community members who use RRNH for playgroups and other activities. It will also serve as an outdoor classroom for training and volunteering. The new space will re-energize RRNH’s facilities and cater to a range of people, including vulnerable families, children with disability and children on the Autism spectrum, and also be used for other RRNH activities, training and small events. It is anticipated the garden will include activity stations such as water features and sound play. Some practical infrastructure requirements will include: a shade sail, a stage, an open area for functions, bench seating, and raised veggie boxes.
