Quick Guide to the Diagram-Explorer Template

Standalone version

1)  Download the latest version of the XERTE tool from http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/xerte/

2)  Download the template HotspotsTemplate.xtp.

3)  Create a new folder for your project, open the HotspotsTemplate.xtp and setup the workspace by completing the boxes shown including naming the project, entering your details and creating an exit URL if required. This will take students to a specific webpage once they have completed the RLO. Next select Image explorer from the left hand panel, name it and select the activities you wish to use.

4)  Go to the drawing screen using the Edit button,

a) upload diagram using Import Image button. Diagrams can be jpeg or swf files. An optimal size is around 550 X 550 pixels.

b) identify areas of the diagram you wish to label by drawing over them with the tools provided.

c) Manipulate hotspots for labels by drawing over the diagram using the tools provided.

d) Use the information box to name each hotspot and add information about each one (optional). Note: Information can be pasted from text documents.

5)  Use the publish button either to create files for the web, or to create a SCORM package that can be loaded into a VLE etc.


Online Version (Univerisity of Nottingham users only)

1)  Go to the XERTE online toolkit and login using your standard username and password at http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/tookit

2)  Locate the interactive diagrams template from the right hand menu and select create. Name your project and create.

3)  Set up the workspace by completing the boxes shown including naming the project, entering your details and creating an exit URL if required. This will take students to a specific webpage once they have completed the RLO. Next select Image explorer from the left hand panel, name it and select the activities you wish to use.

4)  Go to the drawing screen using the Edit button,

5)  Publish your file using the properties button on the toolkit page. To create a URL that others can link to, select the links option and make a note/copy of the URL shown. To create a scorm package to upload into webCT (VLE), use the export link and select “scorm export”
