Main LanguageData
There areapproximately300 differentlanguages recordedintheSettlementDatabase.This data is obtainedfrom anumber of differentsources, dependingonthesettler’s migrationstream.For settlers who enrol withtheAdultMigrantEducationProgram(AMEP)afterarrival in Australia, additional language datacomesfrom the AMEPReportingandManagement System(ARMS) database.
Main Languageis notrecordedforall clientsontheSettlementDatabase.Itmaybemissingfor portionsofsettlers inthe SkilledandFamily visastreams.This variableis capturedwell for the Humanitarianstreamhowever, particularlyfor more recentlyarrivedsettlers.

IntheSettlementReportingFacility Main Language datais groupedintothreelevels.These are:
- Language Broad Groups to;
- Language Sub-Groups to;
- Language

Main LanguageCriteriaand Filters
Criteria
IfyouselecttheMainLanguageCriterion,thenyour reportoutputwill displayandgiveafigurefor each oftheindividualmainlanguages inthislisting.
Inthe SRF thereisonecriterion availableformainlanguagedata.This is:
- Main Language
Filters
Filters work differentlytocriteria;theyallowyoutonarrowdownyour reportdata.Ifyouwere onlyinterestedinsettlers withaspecific mainlanguage,youwould usetheMainLanguage(Direct)filtertonarrowdownyour data.
Whenyouselectafilter youwill be presentedwiththelistoffieldsavailablefor thatfilter.Some filtershavemorethanonelayer,such asthe Main Language(Regions)filter.Thismeans thatyou begin byselectingfield/sfrom thetopmostlayerandcannarrow your searchdowntooneofthe lower levels ifyouwish.
Inthe SRF therearetwofiltersformainlanguage data.These are:
- Main Language(Direct); and
- Main Language(Regions)
TheMainLanguage(Regions) filter hasmorethanonelayer.This includes:
- Language Broad Group to;
- Language Sub-Group to;
- Main Language
The SRFDataDictionaryincludes atablewhichshows howeachindividual Main Languagefits intotheLanguageSubandBroadGroups.

The SRF allows reports tobegenerated byeither arrival dateor grantdate.
ArrivalDate
Reports generated byarrival datewill include onlythosesettlers whoserecordedarrival datefalls withintheselectedDateRange.
VisaGrant Date
Reports generated by visa grant datewill onlyincludethosesettlerswhoserecordedvisagrant dateis withintheselectedDateRange.
Settlement Date(UsingArrivalDate and VisaGrant Datetogether)
To getamoreaccuratecount ofsettlers inaspecific location,itis recommendedto useboth arrival date andvisagrantdate.In order todothis,tworeportsmustberun.Thefirstreportselects arrival dateforvisaswhichwere grantedoffshore(i.e.outsideof Australia)andthesecond reportselects grantdatefor visas whichweregrantedonshore(i.e.in Australia).

When generatingareport byMain Language,thereareseveral things toremember:
- Main Languageis notrecordedforall settlersintheSettlementDatabase.Itmaybe missingfor portionsofsettlers intheSkilledandFamily visastreams.This variableis capturedwell for theHumanitarianstream however, particularlyformorerecentlyarrived settlers.
- Other languagerelateddata availablefrom the SRF includes,English Proficiency.For more informationonEnglishProficiencyseethe SRFDataDictionary.
- The SRFDataDictionaryshows the differentlayers ofthe MainLanguage(Regions) filter, andhoweachgrouping relates toeach other.
