Assignment title / Photoshop Tutorial Sessions & Shop Branding Project
The purpose of this assignment is to:
  1. Produce a graphic design project to a set brief.
  2. Apply research, techniques and materials to the production of Graphic Design.
  3. Apply Graphic Design principles and techniques.
  4. Show through own work and discussion, development of artistic concepts, ideas and solutions within the context of the working brief.

I will spend the next 5 weeks giving you an introduction into Adobe Photoshop tutorials, teaching you the basic techniques and skills you require.
You will complete a Graphics Brief over 5 weeks
The Brief- Shop Branding:
You have decided to open you own shop. Over the next 10 weeks you will develop your techniques and skills using Adobe Photoshop.
What you need to consider as a Graphics designer-
Logo / Branding / Interior design for shop / promotional items
The first thing you need to think about is what your shop will sell and who your customer will be. These will be your ‘AUDIENCE’ – a very important part of graphic design is making sure your designs are suitable for the AUDIENCE. For example, if your customer/audience is teenage boys – you will not want to do a logo that is bright pink with flowers on!
You can decide what the retail business will be form the following selection – A local food shop/Delicatessen, A childrenswear shop, A bike shop or an Arts and Crafts shop. One of your first tasks will be to think of a name for the business.
By the end of the project you will have a collection of design materials to promote the opening of your shop.
Week 1-5:Workshops
Week 1-2Introduce the students to Adobe Photoshop, talk through basic tools (marqueeLasson Polygonal tool, magic wand tool, text tool, brush & pencil tool, colour picker, bucket & gradient tool,eraser tool) Be able to use basic tools, understand layers and adding different adjustments effect and textures.
Experiment with tools, create mood board on hobbies and completed 4 illustration designs.
Week 3-4 Understand and use the ‘layer masks’ features of the Adobe Photoshop program, Moodle handout Leaf & Ring, complete task, experiment with images.
Complete a range of techniques using a wide variety of Photoshop tools- Quick selection tool,Eraser tool, Line tool and creating a define pattern. Complete A4 design sheet with flat drawings, text information, colour palette, inspiration images and your own define pattern.
Week 4-5 Manipulating flower & face on Moodle using Clone Stamp & healing tool- students watch the demonstration and complete the task
Week 5-9 Working individual on set design brief
Week 10 Present Graphics design Brief
Week 5/6:
  1. Brainstorm – Draw up a spider diagram thinking about possible ideas for a shop including – name / customer / what you will sell / suitable colours.
  2. Create a concept board that illustrates what kind of retail business you are designing for. Consider who will form the customer base and therefore who your designs must appeal to.
  3. Investigate a range of successful logo’s/branding designs, print any images that inspire you to create your shop logo design
  4. Logo designs –You will draw a minimum of 4 logo designs. These must becreated by hand in colour and fill the page, add your research images.
Final logo idea - Decide on your final and write a note to say why you chose it.
Homework: Finish you final logo idea on paper ready for developing on Photoshop or scanning for next session.
Week 6/7:
1.Start to develop your logo design on the computer using Photoshop.
2.Or you can scan your final hand drawn logo and further develop your logo using Photoshop skills you have learnt.
3. Finish logo and print out your final design.
Week 8/9:
  1. You will now consider the interior of the shop.
  2. Research interiors such as colours, wallpapers furniture etc for your shop printing things you like. You must then generate a mood board. This is a board that will give the style/branding and general feel for the shop.
  3. Following your mood board you must develop your shop layout, work must be displayed.
  4. Homework: Finish you mood boards and final shop layout.

Week 10: Assessment
You will present your shop idea and worksheets to the class.
Today you will gather together all your work. Use this brief to ensure you have everything needed to complete the project.
You need to now annotate your work and write an overall evaluation/review of how you have worked on the project and if you are happy with your final ideas. Make sure you have presented your ideas well and mounted any final work.

Assignment Tasks: / Assessment Criteria
In your sketchbook there should be evidence of understanding the graphic design principles and application of these to the work of others as well as your own work. Key vocabulary should be used with increasing confidence e.g. alignment, repetition, emphasis. Hand drawn and Photoshop techniques will be used to develop your ideas. Your final evaluation should be a reflection of your personal development. / 1.1 Accept and respond appropriately to the set brief in a Graphic Design context.
1.2 Provide evidence of development of work in Graphic Design Principles and Techniques.
1.3 Provide evidence of resulting personal development.
Following design cycle: brainstorm/development/final ideas (Photoshop work)
Record your ideas throughout the project in written and visual form. Show how your ideas develop and what influences this, making connections with the work of other artists. Work independently to source a broad range of appropriate imagery. / 2.1 Build collections and record in notebooks/ sketchbooks and directly in media, information which reflects personal observation and direction.
2.2 Provide evidence of routes of enquiry, derivation of ideas and sources of reference.

Within your work there should be evidence of a large variety of ideas with the best ideas being pushed to the limit. Creative risks should also be taken. / 3.1 Produce work which shows reflection and development of research, techniques and materials.
3.2 Show evidence of originality.

Within your final outcomes you will show that your Photoshop skills have progressed and you are becoming increasingly confident with the software. You will produce a polished final outcome of a professional standard. / 4.1 Consistently apply a range of technical skills in the completion of a set of tasks. 4.2 Show control of technical processes, practised and demonstrated as appropriate to the demands of the medium, within the context of the brief, and the learner’s determination of finished quality. 4.3 Demonstrate the ability to repeat technical processes with confidence.
In your sketchbook you will show that you have looked at the work of others and it has been used to inform your own ideas. Your imagery will be primary sourced in the majority and will be used as the starting point for your design work. / 5.1 Generate work which is primarily original in concept.
5.2 Engage in a process where ideas and solutions extend and develop from one work to another.
5.3 Relate work to abroad context of other art, artists and related issues, and make a critique of it informed by that context.
