Below you will find our mission, values, vision, history and process by which interested persons become board members. If you are interested in advancing the mission of the Max Higbee Center please follow the steps outlined below.

Mission:The Max Higbee Centerprovides community-based recreation programs for youth and adults (14 and older) with developmental disabilities with three broad aims:1) To provide opportunities for personal enjoyment and enrichment through a diverse range of leisure activities.2) To promote the social, physical, emotional, and cognitive growth and development of participants.3) To assist participants to achieve greater independence in their lives and increase involvement in the community.

Values: The Max Higbee Center values a fun, safe, welcoming, and people-first community dedicated to creating friendships and offering opportunities for all members to reach their greatest potential.

Vision:The Max Higbee Center envisions a caring, inclusive, respectful, and thriving community where people are empowered to grow, develop, and enrich their lives through recreation activities and the relationships they create.

A Brief History: The Max Higbee Center became a non-profit organization in 1984. It is a grassroots organization founded by educators and families of people with developmental disabilities who wanted quality recreation opportunities. It is named after Max Higbee, who spearheaded this movement.

Process for New Potential Board Members

1. Visit an open board meeting. We meet the fourth Tuesday of every month, except December, beginning at 5:30 at the Max Higbee Center, 1210 Bay St #102, Bellingham WA 98225

2. Email the Max Higbee Center, and request an application.

3. Return the application via email to with the subject line “New Board Member Application”

4. When a vacancy occurs, new applications are reviewed by sitting board members.

5. Once the application is reviewed, a member of the board will contact the applicant for an interview with the board.

6. After the interview and selection vote, the candidate will be notified of acceptance or regrets.

7. A new board member orientation will occur for candidates chosen as new board members. Board member terms are for one year and may be renewed annually.
