Special Instructions: Examples
Features you would like captured on the map base such as public land survey system, specific roads, railroads, or hydrography, a specific size (Since detailed maps are printed on larger size paper the general soil and index can also be placed on the larger paper).
* If no general soil map will be include in the soil survey please have the editor state this in the later submitted to Stan Anderson and cc to Mike Kortum. An Index to Map Sheets and legend will still need to be prepared which NCG can generate based on
information provided. To avoid any delays follow the same procedures above but do not submit the general soil map and legend.
General Soil Map: Written in order of preference:
1. Ideally if personnel is available the soil areas would be provided in an arc/info coverage. Also all coverages wanted on the base (roads, hydrography, cities, etc.).
2. Soils and other layers in digitally form that can be accurately converted to an Arc/Info coverage.
3. Soils compiled on a scannable overlay* and a separate map identifying the features (roads, hydrography, etc.) you want displayed on the base.
* NCG can supply a matte film positive for any soil survey with the soil survey limit displayed in black and perennial and intermittent drains in blue. This is ideal for matching the hydrography layer used on the general soil map base. This mylar can be obtained by submitting a Carto-19 and will be supplied at 1:100,000 scale or publication scale.
4. Soils compiled on USGS 1:100,000 series paper print.
5. Soils compiled on another paper print such as a State Highway Map.
In the past NCG used the State Highway Map as a guide to compile the General Soil Map base manually. Now we prepare the base with TIGER files provided by the Census Bureau. The source for these files is the USGS 1:100,000 series maps. TIGER files are
available to all state offices.
NCG is currently developing a program that will enable the MO or state offices to create the general soil map. We anticipate completion during fiscal year 2000. The only option will then be number 1.
