PROCEDURE FOR PROCESSING

SCHOLARLY RESEARCH APPLICATION

WESTCHESTER CAMPUSES

Time Schedule

The Scholarly Research Committee meets every Fall and Spring semester, to consider applications. Applicants should submitin duplicate completed applications forms (including all endorsements) to the committee by the announced deadline. PLEASE HAVE ALL APPROPRIATE SIGNATURES (DEPT. CHAIR & DEAN) BEFORE SUBMITTING APPLICATION TO THE COMMITTEE.

Deadline for submission of applications for the Fall semester is October 15th and for the Spring semester it is March 15th.

Application Process

  1. Application forms must have all the necessary signatures including that of the Committee chairperson. The original application is submitted to the Office of the Provost for handling. The Committee Chairperson retains copies of all applications.
  1. The office of the Provost will notify the faculty member that the award has been granted. Awards will be handled as follows:

a.Released time requests. They are handled through the Comptroller’s Office; the award is based on the average compensation figure for the faculty member’s rank and college/school. Applications for Released Time are accepted in the Fall semester for reduced time in the Spring semester and the Spring semester for reduced time in the Fall semester.

b.Grant requests. If the grant involves a one-time payment, this should be indicated on the application form, and an invoice receipt, or canceled check must be attached to the application. The Comptroller’s Office will then issue a check directly to the faculty member. If the grant involves setting up a budget account, this should be indicated on the application also. The Comptroller’s Office will contact the faculty member directly concerning procedures for drawing upon the account. The faculty member will be required to submit an invoice to the Comptroller Office for all expenditures when requesting payment. If the grant involves equipment, additional signatures are required. Since the equipment is the property of PaceUniversity in general and of your department specifically, the committee requires your signature, your chair’s signature, and the signature of your Dean, acknowledging said ownership.

POLICY STATEMENT ON SCHOLARLY RESEARCH

Scholarly Research funds at Pace University are provided to full-time faculty in order to support research leading to publication in recognized journals, publication of scholarly books, formal presentation of scholarly papers, or provide seed money to develop grant proposals with external sources. Funds are not provided to support theses or dissertations.

Projects are evaluated and given priority according to scholarly significance, possibility of publication, result of past awards, originality, budget feasibility, and likelihood of enhancing the academic reputation of the University. (Note: support for other means of faculty development is available through the Kenan Fund; applications for such funds should be directed to the local Kenan committees.) Preference is give to projects for which publication is assured or presentation is scheduled.

Two types of grants are awarded: direct money assistance and reduction in teaching load. Faculty may apply for one or both types.

Direct grants are made to cover research expenses such as costs for computer time, personnel, photocopies and microfilm, typing of manuscripts, supplies, postage, equipment, and travel to special libraries or other sources of information. Grants are made for a specific fiscal year, and unexpanded funds may not be carried over from one year to the next unless special approval has been obtained. University policy must be followed in budgeting and hiring of research assistants. In the case of funds being used for purchase of equipment, a letter of responsibility is required.

Reduced teaching loads are limited to the Fall and Spring semesters and are generally limited to one course (3 hours) per individual per semester, Released time requests are evaluated and given priority under the criteria used to judge direct grants. Reduced time will not be awarded in a semester in which the applicant has overage.

Progress reports are required of all recipients of either funds or reduced time each semester, and should be submitted with applications for continued support.
