Disability Support Services

Procedure for Obtaining Accommodations

Emmanuel College is committed to serving the needs of students with disabilities. Disability Support Services (DSS), in the Academic Resource Center (ARC), facilitates classroom and testing accommodations in cooperation with the faculty.

  • The process of registering with Disability Support Services (DSS) and pursuing accommodations begins with the student self-disclosing his/her disability and stating an interest in obtaining accommodations. This may be done in person, via email or by using the Self-Disclosure Form which can be found on the Disability Support Services web page. The Self-Disclosure Form can be sent to the Assistant Director of DSS via email, mail, fax or delivered in person. Each student who is seeking accommodations must also submit appropriate documentation (psycho-educational/educational, psychological, neurological, neuro-psychological, medical, or similar reports) from qualified evaluators (school psychologists, physicians, psychiatrists, clinicians, etc.) to the Assistant Director of DSS. This documentation can be sent via email, mail, fax or delivered in person.
  • DSS will review the provided documentation and arrange an initial intake meeting with the student. At that meeting, the Assistant Director and the student will determine reasonable accommodations. The appropriate forms will be completed and the student will then deliver the Faculty Accommodation Form, with the approved accommodations noted,to each professor. This will provide eachinstructor with an opportunity to discuss with the student the nature of the accommodations requested.
  • Depending on the nature of the student’s disability, the student may require various classroom accommodations. The following are examples of classroom accommodations at Emmanuel College:

Standard Accommodations
1. Extended time (“time and a half”) on assessments
2. Separate location for assessments (in DSS) for a smaller, reduced-distraction environment
3. Use of a recording device for lectures with permission of professor (student provides recording device)
4. Use of computer for notes in class

Less-common accommodations include a reader for assessments, a scribe for assessments, a peer note-taker in class, and the use of a calculator in math-based courses.

  • If a student needs testing accommodations through DSS, he/she will submit a Test Accommodation Request Form for each assessment (quiz, exam, etc.). The form must be completed by both the student and the professor and then submitted to DSS at least one week prior to the assessment.
  • Once a student has initially registered with DSS, he or she must complete forms each subsequent semester to inform current professors of the recommended accommodations.
