Vinehall is a co-educational day and boarding preparatory school for children aged 7 to 13 which includes a pre-preparatory department for children aged 2 to 6. The school upholds high standards of academic achievement as well as a very full range of extra-curricular opportunities. It is a vibrant and busy school with high expectations in all areas.

This is a high profile department which maintains excellent academic standards. At the same time, less able pupils are well-supported and the department is generous in providing extra French sessions and extra-curricular clubs.

The French department is housed in an impressive purpose-built library block with two well-resourced classrooms with interactive whiteboards.

There are currentlytwoteachers in the department, one of whom is part-time, and they link with the pre-prep curriculum for Frenchteaching which begins in Year 1. Pre-prep French is currently taught by a member of that department.

We seek a part-time teacher of French for September 2015. The role will include teaching class French to a range of pupils between Years 3-8, to encourage and promote French generally throughout the school and to teach up to Common Entrance and 13+ scholarship.

This post offers a challenging opportunity to work in a busy and highly successful department. The successful candidate will be prepared to be involved in all aspects of life at Vinehall. For example, we regularly have a Prep School French Week and annual visits include a residential French trip for Year 7 pupils.

The successful candidate could run French Club or a club in another language.

CORE PURPOSE

The Teacher of Frenchshould aim to instil enthusiasm for French (and France) in the pupils at Vinehall. He/she will ensure that the requirements of the CE and Scholarship syllabuses, the departmental syllabus and the schemes of work are properly met.He/she will encourage children generally both in and out of the classroom.

The teacher is responsible for the planning, delivery and follow-through of his/her lessons and will be guided by the relevant Head of Department. The Teacher will follow departmental curriculum documents, policies and schemes of work. The Teacher will attend regular departmental meetings.

The teacher will support events, activities and school trips and will help to maintain the high profile of the school.

Every teacher at VinehallSchoolcarries responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children with whom he/she comes into contact.

KEY TASKS

  • Responsibility for the learning, development and well-being of pupils.
  • Planning and delivery of the relevant schemes of work.
  • Fostering the achievement, learning, personal and social growth of each pupil.
  • Ensuring appropriate use of technology (and being an effective practitioner in terms of information communications technology).
  • Ensuring that pupils are thoroughly prepared for relevant examinations.
  • Contribution to all the workings of the relevant departments.
  • Management of resources as directed by the Head of Department.
  • Contribution to the school’s strategic and improvement objectives.
  • Supporting the boarding house (if applicable).
  • Attending staff meetings, including in-service training before term commences, parents’ evenings and school events as published in the termly calendar, such as the Carol Service and Prize-Giving.
  • Ensuring good classroom displays and, occasionally, displays around the school.
  • Liaising with the learning support department.
  • Creating a safe and stimulating learning environment.

TIMETABLE

Vinehall operates a points system whereby full-time staff aim to work to a total of 28 responsibility points per week, balancing teaching with games (sports), duties, activities and other responsibilities.

Vinehall operates a five-day week (Monday to Friday inclusive), with optional extra-curricular activities on Saturdays. There are regular weekend exeats when there are no Saturday activities. Certain school events may cut across free time. Teaching times for part-time staff where possible are individually timetabled to enable staff to be at school for clearly defined parts of the teaching week.

The school day runs from 8.15am to 5.20pm, Monday to Friday, and activities run from 9.00am to 12.20pm on Saturdays. Staff are expected to be in their form room by 8am. There may be one duty day per week (through to 6.30pm), depending on the nature of the appointment.

SALARY

The post is paid according to the Vinehall scale which is based on the government pay scale for teachers. Pay is calculated according to qualifications and experience and will be calculated on a pro rata basis, according to the number of hours taught and any other duties undertaken.

Teachers contribute to the Government Superannuation scheme unless they opt out of this.

INDUCTION

All teachers are part of a performance management system to help set targets for continuing professional and personal development.

As part of the induction process, a newly-qualified teacher will undertake reduced responsibilities in the first year of service.

OTHER

Accommodation can sometimes be provided if required.

Vinehall is a non-smoking school.

We expect that teachers will be able and willing to drive school minibuses.
