Prius Smartkey Programming

Smartkey Programming

The Prius Executive has 3 different codes within the key chip: anti-theft, remote locking, and SMART system. The Sol version has 2 codes, the SMART is not available. If a key is lost, or a new key is to be added, then the ECU must be reprogrammed to delete the lost key or add the new one. Both the Executive and Sol can be programmed with a maximum of 5 keys.

There are 2 ways to program the ECU. The first way, which most likely most users will choose is for the dealer to perform the programming using the Intelligent Tester 2. The second way is via a combination of steps as shown below. In all cases, except one, a pre programmed (Master) key is required. The exception is in the event that the ECU has been changed. I don’t think the majority of users are ever likely to encounter this situation, but the details are given for completeness.

NOTE: Use these codes at your own risk!

Automatic registration (New registration)

The registration of the key code occurs automatically after the key is inserted into the slot. In this mode, a maximum of two master keys can be programmed.

Note: This is a requirement after changing the transponder ECU. A new transponder ECU will switch automatically into this mode.

Step / Anti theft light
1 / Start / Blinks until 1st key is inserted in slot.
2 / Place key in slot / Out for circa 1 second
3 / Registration starts
4 / Registration ends / On. Stays on if this was the second master key.
5 / Remove key
6 / Return to step 2 for second key.
7 / Ends

Notes:

1.  The anti theft light will remain lit in automatic mode until a key is inserted in the slot.

2.  A correctly working anti theft system will blink continuously whilst no key is in the slot. (1.8second interval)

3.  If the registration fails, code 2-1 is shown (2 x 0.25 second followed by 1 x 0.5 second flashes followed by 1 second off).

4.  If a registered key is reregistered, code 2-2 is shown (2 x 0.25 second followed by 2 x 0.5 second flashes followed by 1 second off).

5.  If too many keys are registered, code 2-3 is shown (2 x 0.25 second followed by 3 x 0.5 second flashes followed by 1 second off).

6.  The registration mode can be left after 1 key has been registered by placing the registered key in the slot and pressing the Power switch 5 x ON then OFF within 10 seconds.

Registering an extra key

The car must be in the following configuration.

Ø  No key in slot

Ø  All doors shut

Ø  Power OFF

Step / Anti theft light / Time limits
1 / Start / Blinks until a registered key is inserted in the slot
2 / Insert master key and remove 5 times / Off / 35 seconds from 1st insert to end of step 3
3 / Master key in slot / On after 5 inserts of master key / Within 3 seconds of end of step 2
4 / Driver door 6 times open and close / On
5 / Remove master key / On
6 / Insert new key in slot and leave for 60 seconds / Blinks / Within 10 seconds of step 5
7 / Key registers / Off / After 60 seconds
8 / Remove key / Blinks
9 / End

Notes

1.  A maximum of 5 keys can be registered at any one time.

2.  If you exceed the given times then the registration will be aborted.

Delete all keys

The car must be in the following configuration.

Ø  No key in slot

Ø  All doors shut

Ø  Power OFF

Step / Anti theft light / Time limits
1 / Start / Blinks until the master key is inserted in the slot
2 / Insert master key and remove 6 times / On. / 35 seconds from 1st insert to end of step 3
3 / Insert master key in slot / OFF / Within 3 seconds of end of step 2
4 / Open and close driver door 7 times / On. Off after 7th opening of door
5 / Remove master key / Blinks / Within 10 seconds of step 4
6 / End

Notes

1.  All codes except the Master key code will be deleted!

2.  If you exceed the given times then the registration will be aborted

Smart Entry

The Smartkey codes are identical with the codes of the remote control. After registration of a key code, the Smartkey system and remote door locks can be used. After replacing the Smartkey ECU or the smart keys, a reprogramming of the Smart Entry System is required.

The following modes are available.

1.  New registration mode: Used for a new Smartkey ECU

2.  Add mode: Add a new key

3.  Delete mode: Remove all keys except the master key. Use if a key is lost.

Whilst programming the system, keep all keys away from the car except the one being programmed; otherwise, the system will not be able to recognize the keys correctly.

Add a new or extra key

The car must be in the following configuration.

Ø  No key in slot

Ø  Drivers door open

Step / Time limits
1 / Start
2 / Insert and remove the master key twice in the slot. / Within 5 sec
3 / Drivers door close and open twice / Within 40 sec complete step 4
4 / Insert and remove master key in slot
5 / Drivers door close and open twice / Within 40 sec complete step 7
6 / Insert master key in slot
7 / Close all doors
8 / Choose / Within 40 sec complete step 10
9 / New mode:
Press power switch On - Lock once / Add mode:
Press power switch On - Lock twice / Confirm mode:
Press power switch On - Lock three times / Delete mode:
Press power switch On - Lock five times
10 / Remove master key
11 / The system reacts to a mode change with a number of Lock-Unlock cycles which equals the numbers in step 9. / Within 3 sec
12 / On the master key press any key / On the master key press any key / Within 40 sec compete step 15
13 / If the master key was recognized systems locks-unlocks once, otherwise twice. / When the delete function is finished, this mode is automatically left and the Lock-Unlock cycle is repeated 5 times. / Within 3 sec
14 / Press both the Lock and Unlock key on the new remote key fob at the same time / End / Within 3 sec
15 / Press any key on the key fob.
16 / If the registration was recognized, system locks-unlocks once, otherwise twice.
17 / To register more keys go back to step 14 / Within 40 sec
18 / End / After 40 sec

Note

1.  In the instructions, which switch is meant by power switch at step 9 is not very clear due to On - Lock.
