Print is Alive and Necessary for Brand Health

Despite the world of blogs, digital magazines and e-centric offerings, print products are still the core of the business-to-business brand. So runs the sentiment of those leaders speaking at the 2005 ABM Spring Meeting. The advent of electronic and digital products can't be ignored, but wise leaders still rely on the print foundation and differentiation between the two is vital.

"We are in danger of subordinating print," warned Ken Gazzola, executive vice president/publisher Aviation Week Group.

Media leadersfeel that, often, too much emphasis is placed on development of products outside print. Though important, the two must be handled differently, yetwith equal care.
"Build online communities from existing brands," said Jim Casella, CEO of Reed Business Information. "But these [two] should be different business models."

In these days of rampant proliferation of electronic products, it is incumbent on media professionals to ensure they maintain standards and balance.
"The idea of taking your print product and putting it online is not a great idea," said Jim Spanfeller, president and CEO of Forbes.com.
By ensuring print andelectronic are separate but equal, the reader gains breadth of coverage and convenience, and the brand stays strong.
