Week 3 Term 4
Friday 25th October 2013
Dear Parents and Carers,
Information for Parents/Caregivers
After School Sport continues on Monday the 28th October at 3.15pm. The sport this term is Martial Arts. Students are supplied with afternoon tea and are to be collected at 4.15pm.
Swimming Lessons
Swimming lessons began this week and will continue until week 10 when we have our school swimming carnival. Students will travel to and from school by bus to the Rosewood Pool. Please make sure students have all of the necessary swimming equipment ready for swimming each Tuesday morning.
Prep Open Morning
On Thursday we held our Prep information morning for students who will be enrolling in Prep in 2014. This morning was filled with activities for the students and helpful information for the parents. I would like to extend a great big thank you to Mrs Gail Ducci who organised the morning and for her ongoing outstanding efforts in the Early Years Centre. We had 8 families attend this morning so that was fantastic.
Grandparents Morning Tea
On Thursday we held our first Grandparents Morning Tea at school. It was fantastic to see extended family members come and support our school and spend some time with their Grandkids. Thank you to the P&C for providing morning tea on the day.
Black Snake Creek Festival
This year’s festival was a huge success. Thanks to contributions by all members of the P&C and special mention to Kathy Witt and Brenda Berry for their construction of the ArtGallery. Your tireless efforts were greatly appreciated.

5/6/7 News
Students have now completed and submitted their Poetry assessment and the rest of this term will be spent researching Persuasive Text in the form of “Speeches through our Time.” The remainder of the term will be spent revising grammar, vocabulary and language devices for a range of writing genres. Students have started reviewing a play for presentation evening and will be working hard on rehearsing, set design and costumes in the upcoming weeks. Year 7 students will be making wooden graduation pens again this year. The pens will be made over 2 Saturdays with a roster yet to be finalised. Each Year 7 student will need to be available for an hour on one of those Saturday mornings to complete their pen. Report cards will go home to parents on Monday the 9th December. We are all looking forward to term 4 with our Tallebudgera camp, Presentation Evening, Year 7 Graduation, Break-up Day and a very busy curriculum. If you have any questions regarding the term’s activities or general items, please do not hesitate to contact me for an appointment. Thank you and I hope everyone has a great couple of weeks.
Until next time Mrs N
3/4 News
Hello All,
What a fortnight we have had. The beginning of the term is always an interesting time as everyone settles back into routine. This term we also have swimming to contend with. Thankfully this went off smoothly.
The students had a lovely day yesterday as they were given the opportunity to participate in various German cultural activities. As I walked around I heard a lot of laughter and German language. GlamorganValeSchool also joined us for the day and this allowed both groups of students to meet and make some new friends.
Our curriculum work continues as the term progresses. This term is extra busy as we complete the set unit as well as all the general end of year tidying up. Letters to Mrs Newton are being based on our safety audit. History of the area has taken on a new level of understanding now that the students have realised the importance of Marburg’s German past. The Year Four unit concentrates heavily on individual different perspectives of events and there have been some interesting views expressed. Science is all about the weathering process and how it affects our planet. The boys in particular are very interested especially as we study rocks and soil.
The students have been awarded their roles for our end of year presentation evening play. It is a thoughtful yet funny look at a traditional fairy tale and the students are enjoying their current involvement in The Arts section aptly titled Drama. Please plan to attend this event to be held in the last week of the school year.
Until next fortnight Marina K
Prep/1/2 News
Another busy fortnight flying by!!!!! This week there have been a few interruptions but the children have been very good adapting to the changes and have behaved very well in all the extra activities. They produced some super work for the art tent at Black Snake Creek Festival. When the cricket coach came on Tuesday, they participated very well in all his activities, even though it was extremely hot. First morning at swimming was great, as everyone listened to and followed the instructions.
Oral presentations were very light on this fortnight. There were only a handful of students who presented to the class. I did send home a letter last fortnight listing the topics to be covered this term, and the dates for each presentation. Please check to see if your child gave you this important information. Presenting in front of the class at an early age makes your child far more confident when speaking on the stage in public.
In Mathematics, the Year 2 students are working far more confidently on multiplication. The number facts they had to learn for 13, 14 and 15 were not known very well when I tested them on Friday. It is very important that they memorise the facts, as knowing them automatically will be of great benefit when they do higher mathematics. The same goes for the Year 1 students. There were many who were still using their fingers. They need to memorise the facts and the only way to do that is to chant them as often as they can.
In Language, I am linking science with literature. We are reading Jack and the Beanstalk and have lots of activities in English and Science. We will be looking at the root systems, the leaves and the flowers and fruit.
Ciao,
Gail Ducci

P &C News
First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Black Snake Creek Festival and helped out with the stall and activities! The students and ‘Mabel’ the snake looked fantastic in the parade and the skipping display was great too! Well done MarburgSchool what a terrific display!
The school Art Show also received much attention and all the paintings and art work looked very colourful and impressive! Thank you to teachers and pupils for your contributions. The Year 5-7 Portrait Auction raised a staggering $995. Well done artists!
The Marburger Stall was busy all day and we raised over $2,600 for the school. Thanks to all those parents who helped out, it was great to see you and/or meet you all.
We are also very grateful for the assistance offered from several community members. Special thanks go to Mr Bevan Dance for collecting and returning the painted horse from Doomben. He got some funny looks and toots driving down the highway. Thanks to Lee Gribble and to Graham Leitch for helping set up and dismantle the Art Show display, and to Graham & Shirley Robinson for general help creating ‘Mabel’ the snake, with the Art display and on the Marburger stall. It is terrific to have such strong support from within our local community and we really do appreciate it. If you know anyone who may be interested in helping out occasionally, please let them know they are welcome. As the C in P&C stands for Citizens, our activities are not limited to parents only.
Second hand and older style uniforms are still available for sale at bargainprices. Boys’ shorts are only $2.00 and they are perfectly good for school or home use. Plain green polos suitable for home or sports day use also only $2.00. Larger sizes school shirts and some jumpers etc also available so stock up now for next year.
The P&C will enjoy a little quiet time now until the end of the year, although preparations for break up day are already underway!
We are now looking for new ideas for fundraising in 2014, so if you hear of any good ideas, or know of any from other schools, etc., please let us know or come along to the next meeting.
Next Meeting is on 12th November at 3.15pm in the Prep-2 building.

Our new Uniform Convenorcommencing immediately is Ashleigh Morriss. Please see/phone Ashleigh for all your uniform needs: 0413 892265. A big thankyou to Sharon Berg for your previous help, and for making the takeover for Ashleigh as painless as possible.
SCHOOL BANKING
There are changes happening in the School Banking next year. Tokens will no longer be given to students each time they bank, but the reward system will still operate with the system automatically tracking the number of deposits made by each child. Children with 10 tokens already, or those who accumulate 10 tokens or more before the end of this school year, need toclaim their prizethis school year. A maximum of 9 tokens can be rolled over to the new year. The system will count the deposits, and when a student is eligible for a prize their name will appear on the screen and a reward item can be selected. If the child has not notified me of the reward item they require, this can be selected at a later time.
LIBRARY NEWS
Don’t forget about our Community Library section in our refurbished library. This is for parents and other community members to borrow fiction novels and general lifestyle books.
Open Monday, Tuesday and Friday until 2.45pm, and also Tuesday and Friday mornings from approx. 9.15am
