Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study
The ARIC Study is a prospective study conducted in four US communities to investigate the etiology and natural history of atherosclerosis disease and measure variation in cardiovascular risk factors. ARIC is designed to investigate the etiology and natural history of atherosclerosis, the etiology of clinical atherosclerotic diseases, and variation in cardiovascular risk factors, medical care and disease by race, sex, place, and time (15,800 total patient participants).

Periodontitis and Vascular Events (PAVE)
Links have been shown between susceptibility to periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease risk. This project will be a planning/pilot study for a periodontal program to prevent cardiovascular events, and will establish such elements as recruitment, operations, training of examiners, evaluation of periodontal and cardiovascular event measures, feasibility, compliance.

Folic Acid for Vascular Outcome Reduction in Transplantation
This is a trial to study the effect on folic acid supplementation to reduce cardiovascular disease in kidney transplant patients.

ARIC MRI and Neurocognitive Longitudinal Study
This study examines subclinical CVD in the ARIC MRI cohort, repeating MR imaging and cognitive assessments to further characterize neurocognitive functioning, to provide new insights into incidence, progression, and outcomes associated with subclinical CVD.
Role: Director, Statistical Computing

Maternal Oral Therapy to Prevent Obstetric Risk (MOTOR)
This proposal is to establish a coordinating center for a multi-center clinical trial to investigate the relationship of periodontal disease progression and risk for premature delivery and decreased fetal weight by interventions through periodontal treatment during the second trimester of pregnancy.

Trial of Activity for Adolescent Girls (TAAG)
To establish a coordinating center for a multicenter study to test the hypothesis that a multicomponent school-based and community-linked intervention can prevent a decline in physical activity levels and cardiorespiratory fitness in middle school girls.
Role: Director, Statistical Computing

Clinical Coordinating Center, Behavioral/Pharmacologic Treatment of Alcoholism (COMBINE)
The major goal of this project is to evaluate use of novel combinations of pharmacological and psychosocial therapies for alcoholism, including combining pharmaceutical interventions that use different biological pathways.
Role: Director, Statistical Computing
Longscan (Runyan) 4/1/91-9/29/05
The Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN) is a consortium comprised of five sites conducting 20year prospective cohort studies of maltreated or "atrisk" children with the Coordinating Center located at UNC.

Atherosclerosis, Plaque, and CVD in Communities
(known as ARIC Carotid Artery MRI study)
This project will identify novel cellular, metabolic, and genomic correlates of plaque and early pathologic changes in the vascular wall and determine their consequences for coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, using an MRI of the carotid artery and related biologic specimens and data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) biracial cohort.
Role: Director, Statistical Computing
