Greetings Families,

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I am very excited about this upcoming school year! I look forward to seeing all of our new and returning students on the first day of school. This year we will embark on a wonderful journey as we soar to new heights! Our theme for this year is “Outstanding Academic Achievement for All”! At Calverton, we will strive to make our school the best school in the county! Our goal is to prepare our students to be College and Career ready!!!

As a stakeholder, you are a valuable and precious commodity to our school. Your role as a stakeholder in the school is one of utmost importance. As you know, the doors of Calverton are always open to you and your feedback is welcomed and wanted. I am proud to say that we will continue to be a school in receipt of Title 1 funds. This year you will see some new additions to our staff. I have added an additional teacher to the fifth grade. You will also see the majority of our staff returning for the 2016/2017 school year. As always, the staff and I are eagerly anticipating our Little Eagles’ return to the nest!

We will continue to implement the Common Core State Curriculum in order to prepare our students to graduate College and Career Ready. The Common Core is a very rigorous and challenging curriculum, but it is necessary in order to help our students become critical thinkers and complex problem solvers. This September, I will be representing Calverton at the State Board meeting in recognition for our Excellence in Gifted Education! We received this very prestigious award in May and it is truly an honor to celebrate all of the hard work of our teachers and students. We will continue to purse excellence for all of our Calverton Eagles. To that end, you will continue to see a increase in our expectations for the children to be digital citizens and technology literate. This is in an effort to ensure that our students are able to be competitive in the global market.

We will also continue our quest to be #1 in the state of Maryland for First In Math and #1 in Prince George’s County for MyOn usage. We are going to need your help to make this happen! Please encourage your children to play! Let’s Go Team Calverton! One additional goal for this year is to provide our students with the necessary interventions needed to ensure student success. To that end, we will have a focus on our student data and ensuring we are equipping our families with the necessary information to assist our Soaring Eagles at home! We will be continuously monitoring our students’ progress as well as providing you feedback in the student agenda book. Our goal is to host several evening events that have an academic focus. However, we also are planning events that will give families the opportunity to spend quality time together at Calverton. Look out for the parent flyers and our monthly calendars!

In closing, we are privileged and honored to be providing your child a quality education, which is the key to their future. I know that with each of us working together our eagles will SOAR!!!

Kindest Regards,

Mrs. Sloan
