Primary schools are invited to join the search for Western Australia’s Marine Animal Emblem

Western Australia has a floral, bird, animal and fossil emblem, but no marine animal emblem!

With nearly 21,000 kilometres of coastline, the search is now on for Western Australia’s marine animal emblem – and the Premier is inviting primary school students to join the search.

How to Enter

  • The search is only open to Western Australian primary school students.
  • Entries should be no more than one A4 page of text (posters, videos, etc are permitted).
  • The proposed emblem must be found off the coast of Western Australia and must be an animal.
  • Group entries are permitted through primary schools.
  • Limit of one entry per school.
  • Each entry must include a Search for Western Australia’s Marine Animal Emblem Entry Form.

Judging

Entries should address the following:

  • the marine animal’s uniqueness;
  • the marine animal’s significance to Western Australia;
  • international, scientific and/or general community interest in the marine animal; and
  • reasons why the marine animal should be an emblem of Western Australia.

Dates

  • Entries must be received by 5.00pm, Friday 16 August 2013 (during National Science Week).
  • Shortlisted entries will be notified in early September 2013.
  • Shortlisted entries will be invited to do a short presentation before a panel on
    Wednesday 25 September 2013.
  • The winning entry will be announced during Term 4 2013.
