Personal Profile

I matriculated at the High School Wonderboom in Pretoria in 1968 and enrolled as full-time student at the University of Pretoria from 1969 until 1974, was appointed as part-time lecturer in Hellenistic Greek at the University of Pretoria in 1979, and lectured in part-time capacity Greek and Biblical Studies at the Africa Institute for Missiology at Hammanskraal (an over bridging tuition for students from disadvantaged communities) from 1985 until 1999. I was ordained as minister of religion in the Netherdutch Reformed Church of Africa in 1975 and served from 1975 until 1979 as full-time pastor and campus minister. In 1980, I was appointed as full-time lecturer in Old Testament Studies, associate professor in New Testament in 1985, and full professor and chair of the Department of New Testament (Theology, Section A) in 1989. From 2000 until 2005 I served as the research manager of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Pretoria, became honorary professor in 2008

and was appointed as senior research fellow in the Unit for Advanced Studies, directed by the Deputy Vice-chancellor for Research in 2010 until to date. From 2009 I have served as Chairperson of the Executive of the Board of Directors of the To Care Foundation for vulnerable people (a NGO and NPO Article 21 company which focuses on fund raising for poverty alleviation, social services, and "base communities" skills development). From 1985 until to date, I am the Editor of HTS Theological Studies (SA oldest theological journal) ( fully online and accredited by ISI, Elsevier Scopus, and SciELO SA. I obtained three doctoral degrees from the University of Pretoria: D Litt (Ancient Languages: Greek); PhD (History of Ancient Culture); DD (New Testament studies). I also obtained a MA in Semitic Languages) in 1978, a BA Honours (Greek and Semitic Languages Combined) in 1977, BD (Theology) in 1974 and a BA (Major: Greek and Semitic Languages; Minors: Philosophy, German, French, Latin) in 1977. I have been actively a member of the following professional scholarly societies: New Testament Society of SA; Society of Biblical Literature, Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (selected as Co-Chair of the Matthew Seminar from 1999 until 2005); The Jesus Seminar of the Westar Institute; The Context Group: A Project on the Bible's Cultural Environment; and the Catholic Biblical Association of America. I also served during 1996-2000 as a member of the Board of International Advisors of the the Journal of Higher Criticism (published by the Institute for Higher Critical Studies at Drew University, Madison, NJ, USA) and as associate-editor of the Fourth R. An Advocate for Religious Literacy, the journal of the Westar Institute, during 2000-2004, and as a member of the University of Pretoria's Senate Research Committee during 2002-2005. My previous professional activities consist of being the chairperson of the Research Committee of the Faculty of Theology (Section A) at the University of Pretoria from 1990 until 1999, resident scholar at the Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Studies at the St John's University in Collegeville, MN, during the academic year 1992-1993, visiting scholar at the Graduate Theological Union (Berkeley, CA) during a semester in 1997-1998, visiting scholar at the Tantur Institute for Theological Studies in Jerusalem for the semester October 1999-January 2000, and resident scholar at the St Deiniol's Library, Hawarden (Wales) in February 2000. I was internationally a guest professor in Egypt, Israel, Europe, Australia, the UK, and USA. I presented papers at the following international conferences: at the SBL International Meeting: Sheffield, Vienna, Münster, Dublin, Cambridge, Edinburgh; at the Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniensis in Leuven (Belgium) in 1988, 1996, and 2011; at the SBL Annual Meeting in San Francisco (Philadelphia, Boston, San Diego, New

Orleans and Chicago; at the SNTS in Birmingham, Pretoria, Montreal, Halle and New York; at the Westar Institute Jesus Seminar Santa Rosa, CA in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2012; the Context Group in Portland in 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1996; at the Context Group International Meeting in St Andrews (Scotland), Tützing (Germany) and in Pretoria (SA); at the Tantur Institute for Ecumenical and Theological Studies in Jerusalem, and at the Givat Haviva Jewish Arab Center of Peace in Jerusalem during 2003. I attended the Catholic Biblical Association at Georgetown University (Washington DC) and at Seton Hall University (NJ). During the last 5 years I presented papers at the following national conferences in South Africa: the NTSSA in Pietermaritzburg and Potchefstroom; the NRF Conference on the Shifting the Boundaries in the Social Sciences at the Tshwane University of Technology (Pretoria), the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (Port Elizabeth) on research methodology; and at the University of Johannesburg on gender and queer theory. I have received the following awards and grants: the St. Deiniol's Library Research Award (Wales) (2000); the SA Academy for Science, Culture and Arts (in 2009 and 2012); the Mellon Foundation Mentor Award (2009-2010); the Netherdutch Reformed Church (HCM Fourie Award) in 2007; and the University of Pretoria’s Excellent Academic Achievement Award (five times during 1993-2004). In 2010, a Festschrift was dedicated to me by 67 peers of whom 29 were from outside South Africa, and who reflected on my theological, hermeneutical, and exegetical contribution. I am currently a research fellow of Prof Dr William Loader of the Murdoch University, Perth (Australia), participating in a project of the Australian Research Council on “Power discourses in the New Testament”; and a research fellow of Prof Dr Daniel Smith of the Huron University, Ontario (Canada), participating in the project “A critical edition of the Sayings Source Q”, and a research fellow in the SBL Section Psyhcological-Biblical hermeneutics, working on the project “Forschungsbericht Thirty years of psychological-biblical exegesis of the New Testament”.

Description Editor-in-chief: Van Aarde is the editor of the HTS Theological Studies which is accredited by ISI (Humanities and Arts), Elsevier Scopus, and SciELO SA. According to the November 2012 SciELO’s citation impact report, HTS Theological Studies is the only theological journal included in the top 10 list of most cited SA journals (including natural sciences). HTS Theological Studies’s traffic referrals are analysed by top online sources, namely: Directory of Open Access Journal, Spring Hill College, Liberty University, AOSIS OpenJournals, and ATLA. Between January – November 2012 48 284 unique visitors viewed 202 493 pages. South Africa represents 8.10%. Other viewers are from abroad. During this period 635 824 articles were downloaded.

Description Awarded by the South African Academy of Science, Culture and Arts: The SA Academy awarded Van Aarde twice (2009 and 2012) for outstanding scholarship. The 2012 award was for 2 of Van Aarde's articles published in HTS Theological Studies as two of the eight best scholarly articles in Afrikaans in all academic fields. Markus Cromhout, 2007, Jesus and Identity: Reconstructing Judean Ethnicity in Q, Cascade Books, 15 May 2007 - 390 pages (PhD thesis, University of Pretoria). This dissertation was published in Wipf & Stock's Matrix: The Bible in Mediterranean Context Series. Professor JC Baker, from Texas Christian University, reviewed the publication in "The Bible and Critical Theory, Volume 2 (2009) and remarked the following: "Cromhout’s study on Judean identity in Q is a tremendous accomplishment. His employment, and refinement, of social scientific models continues the forward progress of Social-Scientific Criticism. He makes a valuable contribution to the social-scientific study of early Christian .... Perhaps the greatest contribution that Cromhout offers is his thorough overview of Israelite/Judean history as it relates to identity and identity (re)formation in chapter three ... Cromhout has ... provided us with a benchmark from which future work will certainly derive."

Yolanda Dreyer, 2012, Institutionalization of Authority and the Naming of Jesus, 25 Jan 2012 (Ph D thesis, University of Pretoria). professor Dreyer is appointed as full professor and head of the Department of Practical Theology at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Pretoria. She is the first woman appointed ath the Faculty of Theology. Her dissertation is published by Wipf & Stock, Eugene, Oregon, in the Pickwick Monograph Series.

Llewellyn Howes, 2012, The Sayings Source Q within the Contexts of the Third and Renewed Quests for the Historical Jesus: Wisdom and Apocalypticism in the First Century, Ph D thesis, University of Pretoria. Dr Howes is appointed as postdoctoral fellow at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. An article from the dissertation is accepted for publication in an ISI/Elsevier Scopus accredited journal. Proffesor Patrick J Hartin (Conzaga University, Washinton, USA) commends the thesis with the following remark, among others: "As someone who was involved in the reconstruction of the Critical Edition of Q throughout the process, I was impressed by the way Howes undertook his examination and reconstruction. His methodological procedures were indeed worthy of those what were used in the reconstruction of the Critical Edition of Q. I can only compliment him on his

whole approach and the conclusions at which he arrived."
