Business Meeting

General Membership Vote for PW Chairperson Nominee

» It was moved, seconded and approved that Minnie Whalen will assume the president vacancy

» It was moved, seconded and approved that our name be changed from: “Clallam County Prevention Works! Community Coalition” to: “Prevention Works! A Community Coalition of Clallam County”

» It was moved, seconded and approved that the PW mission be changed from: “To prevent child abuse and neglect, substance abuse and violence throughout Clallam County” to: “Prevention Works! A Community Coalition of Clallam County advocates, educates and invests in our children. Through prevention efforts, we work to end child abuse and neglect, substance abuse and violence.”

Approval of June 2007 General Membership Meeting Minutes

» It was moved, seconded and approved that the June minutes are accepted as submitted

Report on Suicide Prevention Training 8/18/07 Florence Bucierka reported that an Ethics and Suicide Awareness training occurred and was well attended.

Treasurer’s Report – Nita Lynn shared account balance and that we will be changing the budget format. Treasurer’s report attached.

PW Board Retreat Report: Minnie reported on the two-part retreat; task forces were formed (see Committee reports)

General Membership Announcement to Amend the PW Bylaws at 10.8.07 Meeting: Karen Meyer, on behalf of the Board Planning Committee reviewed the proposed By-Laws which were distributed for final vote in October. Changes to the by-laws are:

1.  Name change - -see above

2.  Mission change – see above

3.  Change to definition of executive committee from “five to six” to Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and at-large member

4.  Addition of immediate past chair as a member of the Board

Other Business – Jody Moss reported that Commissioner Mike Chapman suggested tying prevention to juvenile justice work, particularly related to the cost benefit of prevention. Jody also mentioned that Commissioner Chapman is interested in determining the cost benefit of LGIF (local government initiative funding) funds.

Board Planning Committee (Karen Meyer)

9/24/07, 3 pm, United Way Conference Room

Education, Outreach, Publicity Committee (Ellen Fetchiet) – Jim Borte reported that the Committee is working on a new PW flyer, a PUD insert (with safety theme), having Nancy Amadei do a training for Clallam County this fall, the 10 year anniversary of PW, the website, the possibility of a prevention awards luncheon and social marketing.

Norma Turner reported that she is investigating some cost options for the PUD insert, including using the OMC print shop for copying.

Home Visiting Committee (Pam Arnott) – To be discussed: home visiting in Native American homes and how it can be adapted to be more appropriate.

10/26/07, 9 am, Renaissance Café

Membership Committee (Minnie Whalen) - Ida and Minnie reported that PW membership is comprised of: 36 from Sequim, 191 from Port Angeles and 50 from Sequim, plus a few from the smaller communities. The barriers to participation seem to be that telelinking is problematic and that we need to improve communication

Parent Education Committee (Cynthia Martin) - 9/27/07, 9 am & 10/2/07, 8 am, Healthy Families 11/1/07

Cynthia Martin reported that a Parenting Education Summit will be held on November 1st to help provide some continuing education for our County’s cadre of parent educators. The two speakers are Bill Moreland and Kevin Haggerty, along with a panel discussing obstacles and ways to overcome. The Committee is also hoping to bring back Patty Bland and Sue Eastgard to do trainings. Also some “test driving” of Parenting Wisely will be happening through Healthy Families and a volunteer parent.

Website Committee (Shaine Schramling) – feedback to Shaine/Cynthia is encouraged!

Presentation: Pam Arnott and Wendy Schroeder

Presentation concerning Chicago International LaLeache League Conference for Physicians Pam Arnott and Wendy Schroeder, both RN's and international board certified lactation consultants (IBCLC) from New Family Services will present key points, from current research, presented at the Chicago International La Leche League Conference for Physicians in July.
Included in our presentation will be the work from the following researchers.

1.  James McKenna Ph.D., Professor at the University of Notre Dame in the Anthropology Department, whose work involves mother-infant co-sleeping and its implications for infant development, breastfeeding and SIDS.

2.  Nils Bergmann MD, from South Africa’s research about skin to skin contact with parents and infants and itsimplications for brain growth as

3.  Thomas Hale Ph.D. Professor of Pediatrics Texas Tech University School of Medicine has published resources for medications in mother’s milk, as preterm care of the infant

4.  Peter Hartman, researcher from Australia School of Biomedical and Chemical Sciences. University of Western AustraliNedlands, Perth Australia, has done work that will require all anatomy text books to rewrite diagrams for accurate understanding of breast anatomy and how the breast functions. We will share how our practice in working with families will change in our community, from the information we learned at this conference.
