Press release for Mardyke Arena UCC Reopening Monday 15th February 2010

MARDYKE ARENA UCC RE-OPENS

The Mardyke Arena UCC is re-opening it’s doors on Monday 15th February 2010 following closure due to flood damage sustained in November 2009.

The Arena is a state of the art Sports and Leisure facility which caters for UCC students, staff and graduates aswell as a large public membership base in the Cork area.

The facility was forced to close on 20th November 2009 so that flood damage repairs could be completed. Flood waters engulfed the area during the night of Thursday 19th November resulting in serious damage to the ground floor of the Arena.

A team of contractors have been on site since November working 24/7 and have repaired and refurbished all affected areas to an exceptional standard.

General Manager of the Arena Mr. Patsy Ryan “We are delighted to be re-opening the Arena and look forward to welcoming back all of our members and patrons who have been extremely patient and understanding during the closure. I believe that people will be very happy with the restyled and modernised facilities here at the Arena”

The re-opening of the Mardyke Arena UCC is very much a “good news” story for Cork -despite the horrific flooding and devastating damage to the centre, many positive things have come out of this event, not least that Arena staff have been retained during the closure and the repair works programme has generated significant employment in the local area.

All services, programmes and facilities will be fully restored from the day of opening and many new initiatives and incentives will be available for 2010 at the Arena – Cork’s largest Sports and Leisure facility catering for c. 20,000 users in 2009.
