PRESS RELEASE No 45/2007 / 29 May 2007European Economic and Social Committee
Literary Summer at the EESC
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is pleased to invite you to its first literary summer, a series of lunch time meetings with European authors who will introduce us to their latest novel.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, leading European authors will be presenting samples of their writing, highlighting the various facets of our culture of remembrance as epitomised by celebrations.
Remembering important occasions has become an important branch of Europe's cultural activity. These activities, however, have not always prevented certain events from being expunged, distorted or suppressed.
That is why the EESC has invited four well-known European writers to use collective stories, in addition to their own individual works, to document the evolution and customs of our culture of remembrance.
They will raise the essential question about the true values of our "New Europe", which it seems we are sometimes all too willing to forget.
The literary summer comprises four meetings to be held on the terrace of the EESC's Jacques Delors building (6th floor). They will take place at lunch time, between 12.30 p.m. and 1.30 p.m., on the following dates:
7 June: Thomas Glavinic, Die Arbeit der Nacht | The work of the night, in German.
14 June: Lajos Parti Nagy, Hősöm tere | My Hero's Square, in Hungarian.
21 June: Kirsten Thorup, Førkrigstid | Before the war, in Danish.
28 June: Bernardine Evaristo, Soul Tourists, in English.
The authors will read excerpts from their text in the original language. Translations in French and English will be made available.
The literary summer has been organised with the kind support of the: Österreichisches Kulturforum Brüssel, Land Kärnten Verbindungsbüro, Brüsszeli Magyar Kulturális Intézet, Det Danske Kulturinstitut, the British Council Brussels.
If the weather is good, the readings will take place on the 6th floor terrace of the EESC building. Otherwise, they will take place in the Atrium.
