The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development compares prices of fruit and vegetables in Israel with those in Europe and the United States. Here are the results of the comparison.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Research, Economics and Strategic Division has examined and compared the prices of fruit and vegetables in Israel with those of the United States. In most cases, prices for Israel fruit and vegetables were lower than those in the United States.

The biggest differences between prices in Israeli chain stores and those of US chain stores were for vegetables with, for example, tomatoes some 341%, Onion some 149% and peppers some 116% higher in the US than in Israel. The price for 1 Kg. of carrots in Israel is similar to the price in the US at 2.9 NIS per kilo. The biggest differences in fruit prices were found in tangerines (108%) and peaches (97%)

The average exchange rate for the second quarter of 2013 was 3.626 NIS per 1$ - taken from the Bank of Israel’s web site.

The comparison was conducted in the second quarter of 2013 between the months of April to June. All prices and quantities were converted to NIS and kilograms.

This comparison joins an additional comparison held recently between Israel and Europe and chain stores in Israel and those operating in three European countries: France, Germany and Great Britain. Here to, most prices in Israel were lower than those in Europe.

For most fruit and vegetables, the majority of Israeli fruit and vegetable prices are lower than in Germany, England and France. The percentage price difference in a comparison between France and Israel ranges from 10.8% for tangerines to 207% for cucumbers. Price differences in Germany are higher for all fruit and vegetables with the highest prices being recorded for tomatoes: some 260%. Only onions were recorded at a lower price in Germany as opposed to Israel, a difference of 15.9%. In the United Kingdom, price differences ranged from 9.1% for bananas to 316% for avocados.
