Presidents Council Minutes

Presentation of Greek Village (Bob Ferrara – Interim Director of FSILG, Steve Baker - Chair of AILG, DSL Rep):

1.  FSILG Greek Village

1.1.  Possible part of Reorginzation / Renovation of West Campus (20-30 yr plan)

1.1.1.  Place on or adjacent to campus that would have sighting space for some number of fraternities sororities and ILG’s to be located.

1.1.2.  Time sensitive: want to get in to master plan now

1.2.  Gauge of Interest?

1.2.1.  Points Brought up:

1.2.1.1.  Many (all) Houses do not want to give up houses (some for over 100 years)

1.2.1.2.  VERY IMPORTANT: ability to “opt out”

1.2.1.3.  Many Houses do not like the idea of being on campus having all fraternities on campus MIT

1.2.1.4.  Many don’t feel like MIT would defend fraternities that may not choose to live in Greek Village

1.2.1.5.  Most (all) want to be part of conversation so they can have input

1.2.1.6.  Some see it as in the beginning being “there if you want it” but as time goes on will be heavy pressure to join into it

1.2.1.7.  Big concerns: houses being able to maintain their autonomy

1.2.1.8.  Culture may suffer (a lot of culture is based off location and house history)

1.2.1.9.  MIT’s already a small bubble, we value our interaction with other schools and having fraternities move to Cambridge will hurt that

1.3.  Questions that need to be answered

1.3.1.  Who owns everything?

1.3.2.  Potential Rules (paint walls, normal freedom fraternities have)

1.3.3.  Long term Rules (not immediately after move in, but possible situations down the road)

1.3.4.  Incentives to move in?

1.3.5.  Is this the best answer?

1.3.6.  How many fraternities need to op-in before they will do this?

1.3.7.  Parking situation?

1.3.8.  Land/Space distribution?

1.3.9.  Where exactly will the location be?

1.3.10.  Will autonomy be maintained?

1.3.11.  Status if village is approved but a house opts out?

1.3.12.  Interaction with Sororities, ILG’s, dorms?
