Presidential Monuments in Washington, DC

1. Open envelope A. Study the three pictures. Identify the presidents. Write their names on the lines underneath the pictures. Share their names with the group.

2. Open envelope B. Do you recognize the monuments? Match them to the presidents for whom they were built. Write the names of the monuments on the lines underneath the pictures. Share your responses with the group. Discuss the major contributions of each of the three presidents.

3. Open Envelope C. What do you think the presidents would have thought if they were told that monuments would be built to remember and honor them? Write their thoughts in the bubbles.

4. Read the handouts about each of the three presidents. Based on what you have learned, revise your writings in the thought bubbles. Share your ideas with the group. Compare ideas.

5. Have you visited the monuments? You may take home the pictures of the presidents and the monuments and share them with your family. Perhaps your family can visit the monuments together.
