PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE ASSIGNMENT

Pick one Republican and one Democratic presidential candidate. Go to the candidates’ websites and for each, find three economic policy proposals. Summarize each policy and its rationale. For example:
1. Raise the retirement age for social security in order to secure the solvency of the program.
2. Raise taxes on wealthy individuals in order to finance heath care for the uninsured.
Democratic candidates: Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, John Edwards, Dennis Kucinich, Barack Obama, Bill Richardson
Republican candidates: Rudi Giuliani, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, John McCain, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Tom Tancredo, Fred Thompson

POLICY LETTER ASSIGNMENT
Due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, December 4
Submit to me a copy of an informed, careful, macro policy-pertinent letter, written to an appropriate bureaucrat or elected official. In it advocate for a specific policy. If you write to your national representative in the US House, you should address the representative of the district in which you are registered to vote. Your grade will not be affected by whether or not I agree with your policy. I will not require you to mail your letter, but I will require you to include an accurate and full internal address to an appropriate person. To be most effective, your letter is not to exceed two paragraphs or one page and preferably is legibly handwritten. If you choose to write President Bush, it is best to send a postcard.
At the same time you are to submit on a separate page the bibliographic citations for three sources that you used to inform your view. These sources are to be in addition to any that you have encountered earlier in the course.
