The rise in incidence of Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome in working border collies in Australia.

Karen Edwards 2017

Trapped Neutrophil Syndrome (TNS) is an inherited disease affecting Border Collies. This disease affects the immune system and its ability to fight infection. TNS often goes undiagnosed as pups present with a wide range of symptoms, often not long after being vaccinated. Symptoms of TNS are dependent on the specific infection that the dog is fighting and may include failure to thrive, poor growth, weight loss, lethargy, diarrhea and vomiting. Sick (affected) dogs typically die by four months of age as their immune systems are unable to fight the infection.

TNS carriers are well known in all working border collie lines and unfortunately carriers are popping up with increasing regularity in unrelated dogs including various state 3-sheep working sheepdog registered dogs, cattle working collies and imported ISDS dogs (direct imports and semen from known carriers). Carriers do not have the disease themselves but carry one copy of the faulty gene. Unfortunately due to a lack of knowledge about the risks of mating two dogs that are carriers for TNS there have been TNS affected litters produced because breeders have not DNA tested their breeding dogs prior to mating. A simple, inexpensive test is available from Orivet (see below).

A couple of personal accounts are provided below which show the different symptoms that can occur in affected pups.

A personal story from a third generation sheep farmer

My experience with TNS was quite devastating

4 out of 5 pups in the litter were affected and had to be euthanized. After vaccination at 12 weeks the first sign of the problem appeared. The pups developed a severe fever within a few days and appeared to lose strength in their hind legs. The pups were taken to the vet who diagnosed an infection and prescribed a course of antibiotics which initially appeared to have cleared the infection. However, a few days later they again developed the same symptoms. This alerted me that the problem may be related to TNS, which I had heard about but had never given much consideration.

On a second visit to the vet I mentioned TNS to him and tests were undertaken by the vet and samples sent to Orivet for DNA testing. All pups except one proved to be positive for TNS (ie affected) with the remaining pup being a carrier. I then tested the bitch, and she was confirmed as a ‘carrier’. My research indicated that breeding, ‘carrier to carrier’ will provide this outcome. For the future of the industry I feel it is essential that owners show due diligence and test both male and female prior to mating.

A personal story from a lady who had an affected pup

Ollie was a border collie I bought many years ago. At first he seemed very normal albeit very timid off and on. At 3 months old he got sick, he couldn't eat, he couldn't drink, touching him hurt him so much he would lashout. He was unknowingly treated by a vet with antibiotics which helped for a short period. This went on in a cyclic fashion for several months. The vets had no idea what was wrong with him. This poor wee man suffered through to 7 months old before he was diagnosed by Dr Alan Wilton at UNSW as TNS affected. Not long after his diagnosis his mind went as well and he would go from sitting asleep on my lap to teeth peeled growling and snarling in front of us ready to have a go. He was put to sleep one day after I failed to side step him out of the room when he flipped. He tore shreds of flesh off my arms in the process. TNS is the most horrendously painful, horrible disease a dog can die from.

A reminder to all members …..

All members are required to abide by the Animal Welfare Code for Australian Livestock Working dogs which was adopted by NSWSDW in 2012

(

Breeders are expected to comply with the minimum standard below and not breed affected pups. This means ensuring the TNS status of the parents is known before breeding via DNA testing.

Minimum Standard No. 07 – Breeding

Breeders must make all reasonable efforts to ensure that the genetic make-up of both sire and dam will not result in an increase in the frequency or severity of known inherited disorders.

Recommended Best Practice

(a) Owners, handlers, breeders and/or lessees should report the occurrence of inherited disorders to assist progress in reducing these disorders and identify carrier dogs.

(b) Owners, handlers, breeders and/or lessees should follow a documented scheme that allows for monitoring and eventual prevention of known inherited disorders.

(c) Dogs and bitches should not be kept together if there is a risk of accidental mating.

(d) All dogs being considered for mating should be tested for inherited disorders where such tests are available. For those inherited disorders where no suitable test is available, occurrence of inherited disorders in their genealogy should be assessed. Veterinary or other appropriate advice should be sought in this respect.

A DNA test is available for TNS and other border collie inherited diseases. The full Border Collie breed profile with Orivet costs around $160 and it is easy to take cheek swabs with the kits provided.

Narrandera and District Sheepdog Workers hosted the Coprice Murrumbidgee Championship Sheepdog Trials over the October long weekend. The trial was supported by competitors from NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.

Ann Wherry judged the Novice/Encourage and Greg Campbell judged the Open/Improver. They did a great job to get through as the entries were large.

The Murrumbidgee Championship was won by John Perry with Wondara Jazz.

The Bruce Lang Memorial Improver was won by Leigh Foster with MeMate Shirley.

The Encourage was won by Kerry Lovell from Queensland with Fiesta Fuse.

The Jim Dale Memorial Novice was won by Brian Clifford with Quickstep Tango.

The sheep were once again provided by the Langley family and transport was supplied by Buchanan’s Transport. Our thanks also go to all those people that assisted at the let out and with the timekeeping and announcing. It makes running the trial much easier when everyone pulls together and gives a hand when it is needed.

The major sponsor for this event was once again Coprice who kindly donated a bag of dog biscuits for each competitor. Local sponsors supported us also. Our thanks go to these sponsors.

The Coprice Murrumbidgee Championship for 2018 will be held on the 28th, 29th, 30th September and 1st October, 2018.
