"Shelter Box for Burma Cyclone Appeal"

Cyclone Nargis's 190 km (120 miles) per hour winds ripped through Rangoon destroying all in its path, creating totalmisery.

There is a humanitarian disaster happening in Burma as we speak. Over 15,000 people are dead and over 300,000 people

are without any home or shelter and have nothing but the clothes on their back.

What can the Rotary Club of Essendon do?

Shelter Boxes provide a tent fora family of 10 along withcooking equipment, water containers and thermalground sheets. They cost $1200 each and donations are fully taxdeductible. You can donate whatever amount you are able to. We must act quickly as thewet season is only 2 weeks away and people need urgent

help. Please support this appeal as Shelter Boxes are Rotary's best way of helping. Please ask your friends and family to help as much is needed to assist.

Donations should be made out to "ShelterBox RAWCS"

And handed to the Treasurer Denis Rietdyk.

PROJECT SUMMARY

At the end of last year, as an alternative to the traditional ‘schoolies week’ of drinking and partying on the Gold Coast, a group of 10 KTHS students joined with the local Rotary club and travelled to Cambodia to participate in several community aid projects. The main one of these was building houses for a local underprivileged village, made from materials fundraised by the participating students. We also spent two days in the local University of Phnom Penh, speaking with the local students to allow them to practice their English, while also teaching us a little about their background and culture. The last project was a small renovation job in the boys youth rehabilitation centre in which we fixed pipes to give them running water and fixed several of the broken beds. We also provided them with what we thought were simple hygiene packs, but what meant so much more to them. These little things we could do for this inspiring group of people in such a devastated country, were greatly appreciated by them and were incredibly rewarding for all those who participated.
