NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2017

The Annual General Meeting of the Old Bostonian Association will be held at Boston Grammar School on Wednesday 20th September 2017 at 7.30pm

What a year it has been since the last AGM. The school is getting back on its feet whilst the OBA goes from strength to strength.

My acceptance speech last year was about keeping the strong traditions of the OBA alive and kicking and adding more value wherever possible.

Having been into the school and talked to the 6th formers we had some requests for funding. Most of these were for help with students who were less well-off purchasing necessary one off items and whilst we are a healthy organization we felt that these should be supported.

We also installed an out-door dining area for the school, many thanks to Gus Goor for his support here and we revamped the website, allowing Simon Meeds to continue his excellent work on the Facebook page and our very own wiki. Please sign up at www.bgsalumni.org.

Rob Barclay and I have attended all the school events and represented the OBA in our official capacity there. With this renewed focus on the current students and on keeping in touch with alumni across the world we have had to think again about what we are, officially, as an organisation and are, therefore, proposing a few amendments to the constitution to move us to being a fully-fledged alumni association.

It is true to say that our membership numbers have been declining due to natural causes, and the current membership fee of £10, whilst tremendously gratefully received, is not a barrier to membership – indeed because of the speed of how people want things nowadays the admin itself may be perceived as a barrier.

We can see this in the membership figures, which currently hover around 440, and drift down by ten or so every year.

Contrary to that our Facebook group has gone from c. 650 members to 898 members (as of 10/7/17) over the last year.

With this in mind there is a proposal to amend the title of the organisation to Boston Grammar School Alumni, to better reflect the dynamic nature of the school.

In addition, as well as tidying up some titles (altering the vice chairman to vice president) we are re-invigorating the title of honorary vice president, to give life-long status and title in recognition of many years hard work and effort to the association and/or alumni. It is a small token of thanks, but one that feel there may be some deserving members.

Finally, the most important edit concerns the membership itself. We are removing the requirement to subscribe and are imploring that you keep your subscriptions going, but as a donation to the works that we do and the works that we have planned. The purpose of this organisation is to support the students of the school as they go into life, as they become alumni, and to support the school if necessary.

To us, every penny that you give is tremendously valuable.

In addition, this move to make every student an alumnus automatically (and staff on application) broadens our horizons. It also means that all the money that you give comes in as a donation, rather than a subscription, cutting down on administration, meaning that we spend less money on administration of funds.

We will, however, honour our commitments. I said I wanted the OBA to keep doing what it always has. We will still produce the newsletter and every donor will be sent a copy, as will every existing lifetime member.

Future Plans – 450!

Please find enclosed or attached a copy of the charter of Philip and Mary, which founded the school. We have an exciting programme of events to mark the 450th anniversary of the school being moved to the library including; a talk on the charter and the school’s founding by Dr. Haseldine Oxon. Cantab. in January, the usual dinner and Quiz sometime in Spring and next summer we, and the school, are planning a huge event:

The First George Bass day (hopefully not the last) will feature current students vs. alumni Boslympics, including track and field, Puddox and Football, live music, free food, memorabilia, school tours and Batemans are brewing a special beer just for this event. This event is very much in its infancy, but would not be possible without your support. Please let us know if you can help out.

We have Danny Butterfield, alumnus, confirmed for our annual dinner he is an ex professional footballer and has even played a few seasons in the Premier League, he has recently graduated into the coaching profession and has left his days as professional footballer behind.

The County Club is booked and the menu will be available shortly. Again, keep visiting www.bgsalumni.org and have a look at the events calendar – which you can download to whatever device you are using (apple/android/windows/paper etc.)

Thanks for reading all this and I look forward to seeing you at the A.G.M. or one of our other events.

Yours sincerely,

Daniel Elkington ‘03
