An ASUCD Senate Bill to allocate $600 from Senate Reserves to fund the 1st annual S.P.E.A.K. Scholarship during AB 540 Awareness Week, put on by Scholars Promoting Education, Awareness, and Knowledge (S.P.E.A.K.).

BACKGROUND: AB 540 undocumented students make up roughly over 400 students on campus. These students do not qualify for state or federal financial aid, including eligibility for Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), loans, grants, most scholarships, and work study. AB 540 Awareness Week was created in collaboration with Yik’al Kuyum and S.P.E.A.K. to raise awareness about the struggles that undocumented students face, as well as to raise money for a scholarship giveaway.

There will be a total of four (4) scholarships of $300 open to all undergraduate students. The purpose of the Scholarships is to provide funds for students on campus who do not have the means to continue their education any further based on monetary need. Due to monetary constraints, many students find themselves unable to support their college career. The $300 scholarship is a retention tool. The Scholarships will be reviewed by Alma Martinez (Chicana/o Studies—Major Advisor), Mayra Llamas (Student Recruitment & Retention Center –Supervisor), and My Diem Nguyen (Asian American Studies—Student Affairs Officer). The scholarship applications will be due June 6, 2011 at 4 PM. By Wednesday, June 15, the winners will be notified. Funds will be dispersed into each recipients account no later than Friday, September 20, 2011 before first deferment plan payment.
