o) (2.85 x 107)(3.16 x 10-3) p) _9.12 x 10-5_

3.8 x 106

q) _(6.2 x 103)(3.8 x 105)_ r) _(1.5 x 104)(6.25 x 10-3)_

1.9 x 104 1.25 x 10-4

Scientific Notation and the Calculator:

If a problem is already expressed in scientific notation, it may be possible to simply enter the problem on the home screen in Normal mode to arrive at the answer.

Example: Express 4.726 x 10-3 in decimal notation

*** In Normal mode, if the answer cannot be displayed in 10 digits or the absolute value is less than .001, the answer will appear in scientific notation.

Example: Multiply 223 by 100,000,000.

If a problem asks for the answers to be expressed in scientific notation, change the mode to SCI (scientific mode).

Example: The distance from the Earth to the Sun is approximately 93 millions miles. Express this number in scientific notation.

*** In scientific mode (SCI), all answer will be expressed in scientific notation. The calculator is using the notation 9.3E7 to mean 9.3 x 107. To insert E into a calculation, press 2nd (comma). The face of the calculator reads EE above the comma key, but only one E will appear on the screen for your scientific notation. The E can be used in either normal or SCI mode. The EE is used in engineering mode.
