Preparing for Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L) Written Examination – Are You Ready?

DESCRIPTION:

This workshop is for both Deaf and hearing certified interpreters who are interested in preparing for the RID Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L) written examination. Presenters will discuss recommended reference materials for preparing for the SC:L and additional resources currently available. RID’s SC:L candidate bulletin will be covered to discuss the four major content areas of the written examination: Language, Judicial Language, Team Interpreting, Professional Issues. Tips and strategies for successful Study Group sessions will be shared with participants. Hands on mock written examination will be conducted with facilitated discussions via large and small group activities.

WORKSHOP PRESENTERS:

Stephanie M. Clark, CDI & CLIP-R, is a Deaf interpreter with 15 years of experience as a freelancer in settings ranging from legal/court to platform work after attending Northeastern University’s Interpreter Preparation Program for Deaf Interpreters in the mid 1990s. She holds a Master degree in Education with a special focus on Instructional Design and has presented workshops to both Interpreters and Deaf community members on various topics related to Language, Culture, and Interpreting. Stephanie is currently the co-coordinator of the Road to Deaf Interpreting training series in the Northeast region and currently is with Sorenson Communications as a Professional Development Specialist. She holds an ASLTA – Professional certification and is active with committees and organizations at local and regional level with RID and MSAD.

Lesley P. Garey, NAD V & SC:L, was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. She graduated in 1996 from an ITP at Grant MacEwan Community College, in Edmonton, Alberta. Combined with a diploma in Gerontology, she was employed at the Bob Rumball Center for the Deaf, in Toronto, with a populace of elderly Deaf and Deaf-Blind residents. After emigrating to New Hampshire, in 1997, she was an educational interpreter for the Manchester Program for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and then spent five years as a full-time staff interpreter at a community mental health center. Those experiences prepared her for NAD V, in 2000 and the SC:L in 2009. Shecommits her full-time schedule to interpreting in legal settings. Lesley is a mentor and a protégé. She enjoys co-presenting workshops on ‘Team Interpreting’ as she is a proponent for open processing while teaming, and advocates for working with Deaf Interpreters, in non-traditional settings.

This is a FREE workshop.

NHRID is an Approved RID CMP Sponsor for Continuing Education Activities. This workshop is offered for 0.275 CEU’s at the ‘Some’ Content Knowledge Level. This workshop will be presented in ASL. Open to all certified interpreters.
