PURPOSESTATEMENT:
The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific leads intellectual engagement with the Asia-Pacific region through research, education and contributions to public debate, and seeks to set the international standard for scholarship concerning the region.
Crawford School of Public Policy is Australia’s premier public policy school, with recognised world-class expertise and experience in economics, political science, environmental management and development, and on key Asia-Pacific countries, especially China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Indonesia, as well as Australia.
The Arndt-Corden Department of Economics (ACDE) within Crawford works on theoretical and applied problems of international economics and development, with emphasis on the countries of Southeast, Northeast and South Asia, and the Southwest Pacific.
The ANU Indonesia Project is a major international centre for research and graduate training on the economy and society of Indonesia. The Project monitors and analyses economic development in Indonesia, informs the Australian and Indonesian governments, businesses and the wider community of these developments, and stimulates research on the Indonesian economy and development.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:
The Fellow/Associate Professorplays a major role in all ANU Indonesia Projectactivities. The Fellow / Associate Professor teaches and supervises students at a degree appropriate to the eventual appointment level. The Fellow/Associate Professor is accountable for maintaining a high standard of research output, as reflected in published research outputs with a focus on the Asia-Pacific, specifically Indonesia. The Fellow/Associate Professor’s research profile provides for sustained engagement and outreach with government and the public.
Position Dimension & Relationships:
The Fellow/Associate Professor will be a leading member of the ANU Indonesia Project team within the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics.
The Fellow/Associate Professorwill report directly to the Head of the ANU Indonesia Project and will work with colleagues within the ANU Indonesia Project, Department, School, College and wider University community to deliver strategic outcomes in education and research. The Fellow/Associate Professor will be expected to maintain and extend their research, disciplinary and policy networks to enhance the ANU Indonesia Project’s position both nationally and globally.
Role Statement:
Consistent with the university’s promotions policy, all academic staff within the College are expected to undertake work in three areas of academic activity - education (teaching and learning), research and service (including outreach). The allocation of time to each area will reflect relative opportunities within the School and/or Discipline, as well as individual appointment situations.
Under broad direction of the Head of the ANU Indonesia Project and appropriate to their appointment level, the Fellow/Associate Professorwill undertake the following duties:
- Conduct research and scholarly activities on the economy/political economy of Indonesia or related field.
- Prepare and deliver tutorials, lectures, workshops and seminars.
- Honours, PhD and Masters level supervision.
- Undertake other academic responsibilities and administrative tasks related to the management of the ANU Indonesia Project.
- Other duties consistent with the classification of the position.
- Comply with all ANU policies and procedures, and in particular those relating to work health and safety and equal opportunity.
Academic Level C:
A Level C academic will make a significant contribution to research and/or scholarship and/or teaching and administration activities. He or she will normally play a major role or provide a significant degree of leadership in scholarly, research and/or professional activities.
Academic Level D:
A Level D academic will make an outstanding contribution to the governance and collegial life inside and outside of the institution and will have attained recognition at a national or international level in his or her discipline. He or she will make original and innovative contributions to the advancement of scholarship, research and teaching in his or her discipline.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Level C: Fellow
- A PhD in Economics or cognate discipline with a strong record of scholarly research, publication and policy leadership and impact with evidence of an international reputation in that discipline.
- A strong record of scholarship that includes publication in high-ranking journals, success in obtaining external research funding, and the successful supervision of postgraduate research candidates.
- A demonstrated record of high quality, best practice teaching, in the areas of expertise.
- A research specialisation in the Asia-Pacific countries, specifically Indonesia.
- Experience with outreach activities and evidence of significant contributions to the dissemination of research results to government and the wider public through media interviews, opinion pieces, seminars, workshop presentations and conference papers.
- Ability to provide academic leadership by overseeing research teams, supervising other staff members and/or mentoring junior colleagues.
- A demonstratedrecord of effective contributions to university administration, including highly developed communication skills and the ability to work productively at all levels.
- A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies and a commitment to their application in a university context.
- A PhD inEconomics or cognate discipline with an eminent record of scholarly research, publication and policy leadership and impact with evidence of a substantial international reputation in that discipline.
- An outstanding record of scholarship incorporating a nationally or internationally recognised publication record, successes in attracting external research funding, an active current and future research agenda, and a track record of successful supervision of postgraduate research candidates.
- Extensive research experience in the Asia-Pacific countries, specifically Indonesia.
- An outstanding track record of contributions to education including program development, high quality teaching, and original and innovative approaches to pedagogy.
- Strong experience in outreach activities and leading contributions to the dissemination of research results to government and the wider public through media interviews, opinion pieces, seminars, workshop presentations and conference papers.
- A record of effective academic leadership, including leadership of research teams, supervising other staff members and/or mentoring junior colleagues.
- A demonstratedrecord of effective contributions to university administration, including highly developed communication skills and the ability to work productively at all levels.
- A demonstrated high level of understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies and a commitment to the application of EO policies in a university context.
