5 / INTENDED USE**
Give brief details and attach protocol/instructions / Preparation of media
Weighing out of materials
Addition of water
Mixing/stirring
Autoclaving
6 / RISKS to HEALTH and SAFETY from INTENDED USE
From personal exposure or hazardous reactions. Refer to OELs, flash points, etc., as appropriate. Are pregnant women, breast-feeding mothers especially at risk?
Risk of inhalation of Ampicilin, Chloramphenicol and Sodium phosphate dibasic dust.
Risk of splashes to skin from Ampicillin solution, Sodium phosphate dibasic solution, Tetracycline, Chloramphenicol and Kanamycin solutions.
Risk of splashes to eyes from Ampicillin solution, Sodium phosphate dibasic solution, Sodium chloride solution,Tetracycline, Chloramphenicol and Kanamycin solutions.
Risk of sensitisation to Ampicillin, Chloramphenicol and Tetracycline from splashes and inhalation.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid contact with Tetracycline, Chloramphenicol and Kanamycin.
7 / CONCLUSIONS ABOUT RISKS
Is level of risk acceptable? Can risk be prevented or reduced by change of substance/procedure? Are control measures necessary?
Risks are slight but not significant if GCP is followed and recommendations in Section 8 adhered to.
None of the chemicals used can be replaced with less hazardous reagents.
8 / CONTROL MEASURES
Additional to Good Chemical Practice
Use of face mask for weighing out of powder chemicals to avoid inhalation of dust along with gentle handling.
Always wear chemical resistant gloves, eye protection and a lab coat.
Tetracycline, Chloramphenicol, Ampicillin and Kanamycin should be weighed out in a fume hood.
9 / INSTRUCTION/TRAINING
Specify course(s) and/or special arrangements.
N/A
10 / MONITORING
Performance of control measures,
Users of Ampicillin, Chloramphenicol and Tetracycline need to be registered with the HSU and Occupational
Health to enable monitoring of exposure and possible subsequent sensitisation. In addition, Chloramphenicol is also a cancer suspect agent.
Instruction given as to importance and compliance of control measures.
Personal exposure / Health Surveillance
Users of Ampicillin, Chloramphenicol and Tetracycline need to be registered with Occupational Health to monitor exposure. / As decided by Occupational Health representative.
11 / WASTE DISPOSAL PROCEDURE
See School Server for Approved Procedure Document on specific Chemical Waste Disposal.
Sink with copious amounts of water. The concentrations used in this protocol are low.
12 / REVIEW
Enter the date or circumstances for review of assessment (maximum review interval 5 years)
04/12/2007
13 / EMERGENCY ACTION
TO CONTROL HAZARDS / To stabilize situation eg spread absorbant on liquid spill; eliminate sources of ignition, etc.
In the event of accidental release of Tetracycline, Chloramphenicol, Ampicillin or Kanamycin self- contained
breathing apparatus, rubber boots, heavy rubber gloves should be worn. Disposable coveralls should be worn
and discarded after use. The material should be swept up, placed in a bag and held for disposal by external special waste disposal company.
Area should be evacuated and well ventilated.
TO PROTECT PERSONNEL / Evacuation, protection for personnel involved in clean-up, Special First Aid
Ventilate areas at all times.
First aid – Any chemical listed
If inhaled - remove to fresh air – consult doctor if required.
In case of contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water – consult doctor if required.
In case of contact with eyes, flush with water for 15 mins ensuring adequate flushing by opening of eyelids with fingers.
TO RENDER SITE OF EMERGENCY SAFE / Clean-up/decontamination
Clean area thoroughly and ensure it is dry.
