Preparing for Performance and Development Reviews(Reviewers)

The following questions are designed to help you prepare for the performance and development review by thinking in some detail about the key areas of your reviewee’s job, how well they do them, how they might develop their skills, and whether they wish to plan for future career development in the University. You should note some specific examples from the last year so that you have evidence to support your assessment.

Assessing your reviewee’s performance

  1. How well has the reviewee completed the key tasks or outcomes in their job? What have you been most impressed by?
  1. What have the challenges been? If there were there any tasks or outcomes which they did not complete satisfactorily, what were the reasons?
  1. How successful were they in meeting the goals and objectives they agreed with you in last year’s PDR process?
  1. Do they have the skills and knowledge they need for the position? What are they good at? What would you like them to learn or improve?
  1. How well do they work with others?
  1. How well do they organise their work?
  1. Did they solve any problems? Did they make any difficult decisions?
  1. What do they do for their customers? How do their customers describe their work?
(Customers are anyone receiving or benefiting from the work that the reviewee does. This may include students, clients, other staff or managers.)
  1. Did they find any different or better ways of doing things this year? Did they make any positive changes in the way that work is done?
  1. If they supervise/manage other staff, how effective do you think they are as a supervisor/manager? How do you know this?
  1. Did they make a contribution which could be classified as service to the University community or service to the wider community which benefits the University?
(This kind of service is voluntary, not part of their job description and not expected of all staff.)

Preparing for the year ahead

  1. Think about what is going to happen in your department over the next year and whether any changes will have an impact on the work that your reviewee does. What could your reviewee do to prepare for these changes?
  1. Think about their expected outcomes and the competencies. Are there any areas you would like them to improve on?
