SECTION 1: Premier's IOOF Centre for Educational and Medical Research Itinerant Support Teacher (Hearing) Scholarship

As a result of the generous support from the IOOF Centre for Educational and Medical Research Itinerant Support Teacher (Hearing) Scholarship applications are invited for the Premier's IOOF Centre for Educational and Medical Research Itinerant Support Teacher (Hearing) Scholarship.
This scholarship is to enable an itinerant support teacher (Hearing) working in a NSW school, office or in a TAFE NSW Institute to travel within Australasia, to undertake research and investigation into aspects of teaching and learning for students who are hearing impaired.
All itinerant support teachers (Hearing) working in government or non-government schools and TAFE NSW Institutes are eligible to apply.
It is anticipated that successful applicants would spend up to five weeks involved in a study program. Teachers from NSW government and TAFE NSW Institutes will be entitled to leave and the school/institute will be entitled to relief. Teachers from non-government NSW schools will need to negotiate leave with their employing authority. Recipients must organise their itineraries to complete their travel by 30 June 2015.
Time need not be spent in formal study, but may involve a program of visits to schools and institutions conducting interviews, observing exemplary practices and collecting resources related to a specific aspect of itinerant support teaching (hearing).
One scholarship of $15,000 will be awarded in 2014.
Criteria
Applicants must provide information about their qualifications and teaching experience. Allocation of the scholarship will be determined by an evaluation of an applicant’s written proposal (of no more than 1,000 words) addressing:
·  the aspect or aspects of itinerant support teaching which will be the subject of the study and should also reflect current State and National priorities;
·  how the study relates to the teaching of children and young people in NSW with a hearing impairment;
·  information on how the study will be undertaken, including:
o  evidence of preliminary preparation e.g. reference to the literature, relevant research, contact with experts in the field, key institutions, conference/course opportunities,
o  draft budget,
o  study tour itinerary;
·  how the study will:
o  improve learning outcomes for students,
o  impact beyond the individual school/campus,
o  enrich the body of professional knowledge and
o  have its findings disseminated through appropriate avenues.
Applicants for the scholarship would usually select and develop their own research proposal.
Applicants for the scholarship would usually select and develop their own research proposal.
As a guide to applicants a number of areas of interest have been identified as worthy of research. An applicant is not limited to these areas. The potential research areas are:
1.  Transition
Two important stages of transition for students are:
1.  Primary to Secondary, and,
2.  Secondary to Tertiary Study or Employment.
Workplaces today require people to be flexible, adaptable, technological savvy and self–directed. Many students with hearing loss may experience fewer opportunities to develop these skills and encounter limited choices in the options available to them starting in high school. How can effective collaboration and planning, monitoring and assessing involving a trans-disciplinary team support the acquisition of these complex skills in students with hearing loss so they can compete in a global-oriented changing society and not be limited by their choices?
A research proposal could address these issues.
2.  Practical/Functional Assessment
The use of a variety of standardised testing for students with hearing loss is common however they are generally administered in a clinical setting may not reflect how students integrate their skills or use compensatory skills to become independent learners. Using functional and self/peer-rated assessments of their skills and needs in different settings within the school environment, may be valuable to ensure a wholistic approach to supporting students with hearing loss.The support provided would reflect the functional needs of the individual student.
A research proposal could address these issues.
3.  Technology
Technology today is changing the way we connect, participate and relate to each other. How can student with hearing loss use technology to enhance their school participation and develop the capabilities in one aspect of the Australian Curriculum?Issues of onlinesafety, captioned online videos and communicating online may pose significant challenges for the student with hearing impairment.
A research proposal could address these issues.
4.  Mentoring
Hearing loss is a low incidence disability in schools. Students may use a variety of communication modes. There are a number of successful mentoring programs for students but few for students using different communication modes. How can school communities support students to connect and learn from others through mentoring?
A research proposal could address this issue.
5.  Support
Technological advances and access to educational intervention at a very early age have provided students with hearing loss with greater opportunities to achieve on par with their peers. Do support structures in place for students with hearing loss reflect the needs of this new generation of students and families? What types of adjustments and supports in school would best meet the needs, to ensure students have the same opportunities and continue to achieve on par with their peers?
A research proposal could address this issue.
Applicants should include the name and contact details of at least two referees who may be contacted by the panel, as well as the endorsement of the applicant’s Principal, Line Manager or Institute Director.
Within 90 days of the completion of the study, the successful applicant will submit a report of approximately 3,000 words on their study tour to the Premier through the Premier’s Scholarships Secretariat. This report will include strategies which demonstrate the best practices learnt through the study and how these practices could be used in schools in NSW and/or TAFE NSW Institutes. It is advisable to discuss your scholarship application with the Premier’s Scholarships Secretariat at least one month prior to the closing date.
Applications for this Scholarship closed on Friday 2 May 2014.
All applications will be acknowledged in writing. Please contact the Premier’s Scholarships Secretariat on (02) 9836 9032 or (02) 9836 9169 for further information.
It is anticipated that scholarship holders will be notified early in Term 3, 2014.
