Predictive HV Battery Thermal system for Electrical Vehicles (3047)
Target group: Automotive Engineering

At Research and Development you will be a key contributor to the next generation outstanding luxury cars from Volvo. Together with other engineers around the world, you and your team will create innovative human-centric car technology that makes life less complicated and more enjoyable for people. Are you interested in design and connected car technology? Do you share our passion for people, the environment and our urge to create a superior driving experience? Research and Development is the place for you to prosper.

This thesis work will be carried out within the Department of Propulsion Energy Systems, which is a part of VCC´s Research and Development organization.
We are dedicated to electrify our brand in a broad effort with Plug-In Hybrids (PHEVs) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). At the engineering department of Propulsion Energy Systems, we are responsible for design and delivery of the technical solution of Traction Battery systems for electrified vehicles. We cover the complete product development of mechanical, electrical and software. We are the core competence center in Northern Europe in regards to Lithium Ion technology and automotive battery systems.

We at PES (Propulsion Energy Systems) are now investing heavily in developing our analyses and validation operations for traction batteries in terms of simulations and through developing our new battery lab. The analyses of traction batteries grow fast and challenges both VCC, battery suppliers and our OEM competitors.
Volvo Cars 97433 Analyses & validation Traction batteries team focus on all kinds of CAE simulations relevant for batteries as well as validations on the component and battery pack level. We develop simulation and test methods for Hardware (HW) and Software (SW) for traction batteries and see to that the methods are validated. Later the methods developed will bel utilized in the increasing number of Battery electric and hybrid vehicle projects.

Our responsibilities include development of CAE methods for electrochemical, thermal, electrical, EMC, diagnoses, control & calibration of batteries in close cooperation with design, test and simulations engineers both internally and from other departments. You will also interact with colleagues, at other units within VCC or external companies and organizations. We are a young and developing team.

Background
Design of HV battery thermal system in PHEV/EV vehicles is a key part of the entire battery pack development. HV Battery thermal system has a big impact in vehicle performances. An accurate HV battery thermal system control can improve longer vehicle range and battery life time.

Scope

  • Investigation about the battery cooling needs for different projects/vehicles (PHEVs/EVs).
  • Investigation about the battery cooling needs for different customers;
  • Balance with other attributes/nodes (i.e. outer cooling/climate/energy manager.
  • Design of SW logic;
  • Test and validation of work performed

The students will work in the Traction battery department together with our teams of CAE and analysis Engineers and SW teams.

Profile

  • Two students that can split the topic in different parts (as suggested or in a different way according to knowledge and interest).
  • At least, one candidate shall have a thermal/CFD background, the other with control/SW background (Simulink).
  • Analytic, self-motivated and result oriented in their problem solving approach.
  • Communication skills are important since information will be needed from several different parts of the organization
  • Suitable backgrounds are Electric Power Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Engineering Physics or similar.

Duration

  • Period: 1 semester, 30 ECTS points
  • Starting date: January 2018
  • Number of students: Suitable for 2 student, se profiles above.
