ENGINEERING BASED WORK PLACEMENTS

SECTION 4 GUIDELINES

Section 4 of the Work Experience Health and Safety Preparation Programme of Study, “Specific Significant Risks associated with High Risk Placements”says that the school is responsible for making sure that young persons are taught:

a) to recognise Specific Significant Risks and the Control Measures applicable to the employment sectors which are by their very nature High Risk Occupations;

b) to understand the importance of complying with any control measures to minimise a specific risk identified as part of the employer’s Young Persons Risk Assessment;

before they attend a work placement.

These guidelines set out the minimum requirements in terms of the significant risks and their associated control measures.

Moving vehicles
Cars, vans, fork lift trucks etc / Designated parking area.
Segregation between pedestrians and vehicles, where reasonable and practical / The driving of any vehicle by the young person is prohibited.
Young person is made aware of segregation routes (through induction)
Young person can be a passenger in a vehicle where it is a road vehicle, fitted with seat belts.
Fire
Petrol, diesel, L.P.G / All employees given fire training on induction and regular fire drills.
Use of fire fighting media readily available and training given / Young person to be made aware of fire hazards that each substance poses.
Fire alarm procedures explained to young person. Young person must not use fire appliances.
Management to be aware that young person is working in premises to be included in register.
Manual handling / Manual handling eliminated where possible.
On induction employees are aware of lifting practices.
Pallet trucks, lifting equipment maintained and in good condition.
Dual lifts where possible / Young person to lift only objects that are within their acceptable capabilities by testing the object first.
Instruction on correct lifting techniques to be provided.
Chemicals
burns, irritation, toxins / All chemicals stored and checked by relevant person
Access to chemicals only by authorized personnel.
Chemicals used under controlled conditions must be used with the appropriate equipment.
Personal protective equipment used e.g. goggles, gloves, aprons and mask / Young person instructed on chemical hazards.
Controlled chemicals such as solvents and acids are not to be used by young person.
Young person to be issued with personal protective equipment while using chemicals that could cause irritation.
Young person to be instructed on use of mild and hand cleaning chemicals e.g. sanitizer, mild bleach.
Slips, trips and falls.
Slipping on floors due to fluids, water, oil etc.
Trailing leads, materials in use / Employees to be made aware of any wet or oiled floors with the use of signage or word of mouth depending on the size of the work area.
Employees warned to look where they are walking. / Young persons to be made aware of what to do if they create a spillage and any such cleaning activities that will leave residue on the floor(s).
Young persons to be made aware of the range of trip hazards that could exist due to normal working practices.
Noise
Damage to hearing / Employer to issue employees with personal protective equipment. / Young person to wear ear protection when required.
Employer to issue personal protective equipment e.g. ear defenders.
Use of machinery and other power tools
Impact, crush / Regular inspection.
Equipment examined and tested.
Appropriate guards fitted and used.
Personal Protective Equipment used. / Young person must not use any tools/ machinery driven by electricity (even 110 volt) air, fuel or explosive cartridge.
The young person can use battery powered tools but must be given relevant training.
Where a young person is working under a hoist, hydraulic car lift (not jack) they must be constantly supervised.
The young person must be warned about the dangers of working near electrical supply leads.
Dust and Airborne Pathogens
Inhalation, allergic reaction, asphyxiation, fibre glass resins. / Use of (L.E.V) local exhaust ventilation/general ventilation
Maintenance of extraction systems maintained to a high standard.
Personal protective equipment to be used. / Young person to be advised of the hazards when working in an area where there is dust/pathogens that could be harmful.
Young persons to be constantly supervised.
Young person to be issued with person protective equipment e.g. masks and goggles.
