PRAYER FOR A CHURCH ANNIVERSARY

O gracious Lord, we give you thanks for the great blessing of your loving presence with our church across the changing years of Christian service. We are grateful for those founding members who cared enough about the verities of eternity to found this church in a first building of worship. We remember the later sacrifices of time and talent so that more adequate facilities could be provided for their children and grandchildren to learn about God and how to live as Christians. Today we ask anew for a special portion of your power that we may never become indifferent to the values of Christian fellowship, with one another and with the other churches in our beloved community. Even as we celebrate our commitment, help us to realize with humility our human frailties and to remember your promise that a thousand years with you are as but a day. Let our day be strengthened with the righteousness that comes from you. These mercies we ask in the name of your Son, Jesus, our Lord and our Savior. Amen.

MOTHER’S DAY

Mother’s Day is set apart every year in honor of motherhood. On the second Sunday in May, many families and churches make a special point of honoring mothers. Many people follow the custom of wearing a carnation Mother’s Day. If a person wears a colored carnation, it means that their mother is living. If they wear a white carnation, it indicates that their mother is deceased.

Mother’s Day received national recognition on May 9, 1914. On that day, President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution of Congress recommending that Congress and the executive departments of the government observe Mother’s Day. The following year, the President was authorized to proclaim Mother’s Day as an annual national observance.

A Prayer is Something We Give

A prayer is something we give to God

When we want to say Hi.

It’s also how we ask for things

When we wish, hope or cry.

A prayer is something we give ourselves

To ease our troubled mind.

It helps to know we have the ear

Of someone very kind.

A prayer is something we give to friends,

Family, and strangers too.

Prayer is always the answer to

“Is there anything I can do?”

So take the time to pray today

It doesn’t matter from whom.

Peace of mind is moments away.

So get to praying soon!

Mean Mom

Author Unknown

W

as your Mom mean? I know mine was. We had the meanest mother in the whole world! While other kids ate candy for breakfast, we had to have cereal, eggs, and toast. When others had a Pepsi and a Twinkie for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches. And you can guess our mother fixed us a dinner that was different from what other kids had, too.

Mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You’d think we were convicts in a prison. She had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with them. She insisted that if we said we would be gone for an hour, we would be gone for an hour or less.

We were ashamed to admit it, but she had the nerve to break the Child Labor Laws by making us work. We had to wash the dishes, make the beds, learn to cook, vacuum the floor, do laundry, and all sorts of cruel jobs. I think she would lie awake at night thinking of more things for us to do. She always insisted on us telling the truth the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

By the time we were teenagers, she could read our minds. Then, life was really tough! Mother wouldn’t let our friends just honk the horn when they drove up. They had to come up to the door so she could meet them. While everyone else could date when they were 12 or 13, we had to wait until we were 16.

Because of our mother we missed out on lots of things other kids experienced. None of us have ever been caught shoplifting, vandalizing other’s property or ever arrested for any crime. It was all her fault. We never got drunk, took up smoking, stayed out all night, or a million other things other kids did.

Now that we have left home, we are all educated, honest adults. We are doing our best to be mean parents just like Mom was. I think that is what’s wrong with the world today. It just doesn’t have enough mean moms anymore.

Happy Mother’s Day

Handy Hints:

  • Peroxide Remedy: Use a little bit of hydrogen peroxide to remove a blood stain on your clothes (it may work better on some materials than others). Then launder the article of clothing as indicated on the cleaning label instructions. Works great to help remove that ugly stain. Best when treated right away.
  • Wasp Sting: If you get stung by a wasp, make a paste of baking soda and water. Dab it on the sting. Works fast and substantially relieves the pain.
  • Smart Cleaning Idea: While trying to figure out a way to clean under the refrigerator, washer and dryer, fasten an old sock tightly with a rubber band slipped over the end of a yard stick. With cleaner sprayed on the sock, it works perfect reaching all the way under appliances.
  • Fat Strainer: You can strain fat out of meat broth by pouring it through a paper coffee filter. Works every time.
