Compass Men’s Bible Study LESSON 12 Hebrews 6:4-12
Day 1 / THEN
Read Hebrews 6:4-12
1)These verses have been debated since they were penned. The debate is whether these are saved people who “lose their salvation” or people who appear to be saved, but were never really Christians. Read Hebrews 3:6, 14; 10:23. How does the writer of Hebrews describe salvation in these verses and how we know one has obtained it?
2)Read Matt. 10:22, 24:13; Luke 8:15; James 1:12. What do these verses say about salvation and how do they relate to what the writer of Hebrews says?
Pray to have a complete understanding of how the Bible describes salvation
Day 2 / THEN
Read Hebrews 6:4-6
3)Read Acts 8:9-24; Matt. 7:21-23; 1 John 2:18-22; Luke 8:4-15. What do these passages have in common? How do they inform our reading of Hebrews 6:4-12?
4)Read John 6:35-37, 10:27-30; Rom. 8:28-30, 11:29; 1 Peter 1:3-4? What do these verses say about those who are truly saved and about the gift of salvation from God? How does this help explain Hebrews 6:4-6?
Praise God for the confidence that comes with His true salvation.
Day 3 / ALWAYS
Read Hebrews 6:4
5)Read Heb. 2:3-4; 10:26-31; 12:22-25? The writer warns the readers about apostasy in 6:4, but throughout the book he describes what apostates look like. What are some of the descriptions found in these passages? From the time Hebrews was written until the present, what has always been true about those who renounce God?
6)Read Matt. 10:14-15; Rom. 1:21-26; 1 Tim. 1:18-20. These passages describe some very specific decisions made by the apostate. What decisions are described here and what are the consequences that follow those decisions? How does this help you understand the apostate in Hebrews 6? Read 2 Corinthians 13:5 have you examined yourself to see if you are of the faith and not just seriously dabbling in Christianity?
Pray to be able to recognize people by their fruits.
Day 4 / ALWAYS
Read Hebrews 6:7-8
7)In metaphor, the author is describing two different kinds of people. How do they differ? Read John 15:5; 2 Cor. 5:15. What are the distinguishing marks that will always identify a true Christian?
8)Consider again Hebrews 6:7 and examine your “crop.” Write down some examples of a useful crop in your life. What are some ways that you can always depend on to improve on your usefulness to God?
Pray that you would bear fruit which glorifies God.
Day 5 / NOW
Read Hebrews 6:1-9
9)After the serious confrontation and warning in Hebrews 6:1-8, the author encourages the readers in verse 9. Confrontation about one’s faith is a difficult thing. What principles from this passage can you use when confronting someone about his faith? How would you respond if someone confronted you like this?
10)There is a phrase tacked onto the end of this verse Hebrews 6:9: “things that belong to salvation.” Why do you think the author says this here? How does it inform our view of the whole passage? How many of the “things that belong to salvation” might someone be able to identify in your life?
Pray for the humility to accept the hard teachings of Scripture.
Day 6 / NOW
Read Hebrews 6:10-12
11)Why does our work in helping God’s people make our hope more sure?
Read 1 John 3:16-18. How have you seen this passage manifested in your own life?
12)How do you fight any spiritual laziness in your life that might make your hope less secure? Who are the people in your life that you seek to imitate in faith and patience?
