- 2018 Computer Science Standards for California Public Schools (Information)
In November 2016, the California Department of Education convened three regional focus groups to gather input on what guidance and information should be included in the computer science standards. The Computer Science Focus Group Report (Attachment 1) summarizes the oral comments received at the focus group meetings and incorporates the written comments received during that time. These comments are the basis for the draft guidelines that will direct the work of the Computer Science Standards Advisory Committee (SAC).
2. Draft Guidelines for the Development of the Computer Science Standards for California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Information/Action)
The Draft Guidelines for the Development of Computer Science Standards for California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Attachment 2) are based on statutory requirements, comments received at the three focus group meetings, and written comments received in November and December 2016.
The Education Technology Committee will review the draft guidelines and make edits or modifications as necessary, and will take action to forward the draft guidelines to the full Instructional Quality Commission (IQC). Once the full IQC approves the guidelines, they will be forwarded to the State Board of Education (SBE) for approval at the July 2017 SBE meeting.
3. Recommendation of Members of the Computer Standards Advisory Committee (SAC) to the State Board of Education (Information/Action)
The Education Technology Committee will review the applications and recommend applicants for appointment to the SAC to the full IQC. Once the full IQC takes actions on the Education Technology Committee recommendations, those recommendations will be forwarded to the SBE. The SBE will appoint SAC members at the July 2017 SBE meeting.
California Education Code, Section 60605.4 (a) requires expertise and experience across all grade spans and experts in computer science and a minimum of one-half of SAC members must be teachers currently teaching K–12 students (Attachment 3).
The information in the SAC Application Summary Table (Attachment 4) is provided to support the appointment of a SAC that meets the Education Code requirements.
The SAC applications and resumes are provided in Attachment 5. The applications and resumes were not edited and may contain errors. Copies of the application will also be available for public review during the IQC meeting on May 18, 2017.
